Console gamer who wants to make the switch...

Thanks guys, this is all very helpful. I thought I was in a good place, until the IT guy saw what I was looking at during my lunch break and decided to chip in. Muddied waters indeed.

Do you need wifi?

Yep, I will do, plus a Windows licence I imagine, where's best to try and get one of those?

if you need wifi, then there's only 1 board to even consider, outside of going for a mini itx build
with respect to windows, i suggest you have a quick google hot uk deals and search for windows keys :)

Swap out the Tomahawk for the below - it's MSI again with better VRMs again and built in Wifi.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
EDIT@ or forgo subtlety and follow @tamzzy's guide for getting it :D

Cool, this is fantastic. I feel I'm getting somewhere now, thanks for all the hand holding! Need to start watching some build tutorial videos now!
There's some very good step by step YouTube tutorials out there - never watched one - but they do exist.

Yes, watch them - and watch a few as i'm sure some will miss subtle tips/steps that will be picked up in others that a newbie will find useful.

Also, and this is very imortant - RTFM (your IT guy can explain this acronym if you're unfamiliar) - more often than not people post with simple build issues and the answer is already in front of them in black and white had they opened the manual.

That said - if you run into problems post back - i've talked a few people through complete builds on here (haven't got time to do that now - takes hrs) - but combined we can certainly answer any issues you run into and guide you through any steps you're still unsure of even after YouTube/RTFM.

Post back when you finally decided on your spec.

Aorus x370 5 has MUCH better VRM then the MSI .
Yeah, @tamzzy alluded to the better VRMs - but OP is budget restricted and there is a very good chance the board would need a BIOS flash before use. More expense or waiting for a turnaround from Gigabyte etc...

The B450 Carbon with WiFi seems the solid all round choice given his needs and ease of installation - even when compared to the x370 (great value now - fitted one a ~18 months ago; looked and felt very premium.).

/even more confused MrBraindown :D

About 3 days for turn around of bios flashing , them collecting and sending back.
Bios should be up to date by now in those boards, prob last of the stock
But lacks the WiFi which I believe is a big part of the build ?
X370 had bigger SoC phases then x470 did , can't remember if x570 switches back to this or is in the middle (I get rid of data after reading )

I'm banking on Gigabyte stepping up with the x570 (sure they will - as this release is huge for all concerned) - as i really want a board with reputable forum rep on hand plus UK RMA for a 'launch purchase' (if i do - as may be away, depends on actual release date :/).

Even, if it's not quite up to beat with other brands - if the differences are negligible, i'll probably still go Gigabyte for the x570.

/tell them to make a none bling special edition for me!

better then their z390 line up, by a little bit - thats just VRM count. not sure if they are still going to use same mosfet units ( most likely though as 10/14 IR units cost a lot and will drive up prices of lower and mid range boards)

asus's as taken a direct page from them .... but can they sort out recent poor form of RMA/Customer service across the globe ...

boards might be pre-order June but Chips are def July for resellers ! again might be able to pre-order but july they will land

Errrmm, yeah you could say that! Are you guys just messing with me now? :D:D:D
Of course - it's how we get our kicks; watching new members trash their hard earned money :D

This often happens - we debate details/components in the thread and this usually results in a better, overall, build for the OP. If you look back through the thread you will notice that your build has evolved and shaped itself directly to your immediate/future needs.

*Also, @orbitalwalsh is a savant of statistical component data and can unleash numbers at will - they have to get out of his head, otherwise he goes in to boot loop mode (the guy is crammed full of info - it has to be released incrementally) :D

@MrBraindown - the last spec advised fulfils your budget and criteria. It has an excellent B450 motherboard which will nurture future Ryzen 3000 releases and built in Wi-Fi goodness. You have a CPU and GPU combo that will power it's way through 1440p at a very respectable refresh rate and a monitor which is great value - and looks the part too.

I agree with @orbitalwalsh about the GPU choice - but if budget dictates then the mini 2070 will suffice. But the larger cards are quieter/cooler...

Other than that you're good to go...

i'll be going into sleep mode soon enough !
Can't bring myself to sympathise i'm afraid, as I envy what the future holds for you.

We stuck at two - boy/girl; both gorgeous, caring characters - #1 son becoming unnervingly bright and a daughter growing up to be disconcertingly pretty (unbiased opinion of course) - so oiled baseball bat at the ready for would be suitors (she knows boys are evil), for when she's older! But, we both regret not having a third. We technically could, but careers, other complicated factors make it unlikely - plus i'll live vicariously through your sleep deprived delirium :D

Besides, all your first time parent worries are gone. You now know: they're not made of 'fine 1000 year old porcelain', yes they can hold scarily high fevers that used to scare the living crap out of you in the middle of the night. Your house is probably already trashed from your other, still, young kiddies, you're used to having zero privacy - ever, money was a novelty with two - what difference will a third make (apart from uni fees :s ), you're used to zoning out at the inane kids TV (why are they all Scottish?). And waking up with a dead weight on your chest at 6 in the morning, with a face, blinking its eyes into yours, to wake you up is still the best feeling ever when greeted with a beaming smile... God, i'm gonna miss that..

Biggest problem i can foresee is that you need a baby proof house and you have 2 young kids making it one massive choke hazard - been there, f'ing nightmare. Good luck chasing around the house, wishing that lego had never been invented, for the next 3 years...

@MrBraindown - we're not off topic, you have to have a baby to complete your build. If Orbi gets really tired he may supply you one already house trained. Well, apart from its penchant for sticking soft toys into computer cases - but then he does build PCs which advertise their RGB presence...

I've got two already... my eldest almost let the cat out of the bag yesterday when I was looking at specs for the 2070. He exclaimed (a little too loudly and within earshot of his mum) "This is £450? Just one little computer bit?" I had to hush him up quickly, as my wife still thinks I'm not spending anymore than £500 on the whole thing :D

I'm going to finalise my basket later and post it up. Then I'm going to open my wallet....

@Plec there is always the fun for trying for the 3rd.. if it happens it happens :p least b x570 before hand !!!

AH ! the parvum case and toys... thing is in the shed! might actually have to give it away free on here! lol

@MrBraindown wife doesn't mind the parts, but Hates RGB as lights set her off with headaches :D
one point had the case near sons cot when he was about 6months in their room... had to swap out the £20 a pop silent wings so could put him to sleep and gaming whilst telling the wife... hes almost there!!!!

Well, i can't see you having the physical means to have a third child - because if your wife finds out the true cost, i suspect your ability to procreate will be stored in a jar filled with formaldehyde, placed by your new build, as a permanent reminder. And, b*****s be crazy, so be sure to direct her towards @tammzy if she still requires more blood...

/you do know your son is going to accidentally drop you in it eventually :D

Sell it in the MM - you will have 3 little mouths to feed.

Hehe - your kids are going to grow up needing the sound of a background hum and the low glow of a led to sleep. A bit like playing traffic noise on loop when you move to the country for the first time...

Right, here goes, final checks please :D

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,081.09 (includes shipping: £13.20)

I can get the MOBO and CPU cheaper elsewhere and I'm actually swaying towards @orbitalwalsh's GPU suggestion, which still brings it in at just over £1000 - so I actually save money!!!! (To maybe blow on a VR headset... or a better monitor.... but sim racing in VR though, its tempting.)
