Console gamer who wants to make the switch...

i refuse to help if i don't see any pics of the build in-progress lol.
Yep, proof of life!

talked my brother through his first build over skype, took about 4 hours
Yeah, a lot easier than forum back and forth (i help friends/family out this way if i can't get over) - but i'm not offering to skype members (no offence @MrBraindown).

I like the barrier/separation of text communication - plus it's easier to hide your frustration/profanity when you realise they've totally ignored a crucial step - even though your 'second' request for clarification was in the affirmative :/

i never mentioned about turning it on :D

once its built... i just look at the thing haha
Yep, as long as the PSU powers the case RGB - he can have an ornamental glowing brick in less than 3 hours :D (Our new goal!)

Or plug something in wrong and you get an ornamental glowing brick for ever

And so it begins...... these have just turned up.

The rest is arriving tomorrow!

I also spent time cleaning out the garage today and stumbled upon this, will my new rig be able to handle it on ultra-high settings?

(Bet I'd have to download DosBox or something similar to run it though)
(I've also just set up my imgur account)

Get Starcraft 2 - i think it's free now.

Also found this lot in the garage:

It appears that the 160gb one actually works, which is a bonus. The 500gb seems to power up but makes a faint ticking noise and my laptop doesn't detect it. I take it there's nothing I can do to save it?

Save the data you need - then smash them all up with a hammer.

You'll be better off buying a single new 2Tb mechanical drive rather than attaching an assortment of aged ticking 'data wiping' time bombs...

Was it powered (in a caddy)?

Evening all, my first quick question. According to various build videos my PSU should be placed 'fan facing down', I was just about to do this, but then I noticed that my button words would be upside down. Does this matter, is it ok to put it 'fan down'

Yep, fan facing down (draws air from the bottom of the case - it's why there's a filter) - you'll overcome your OCD regarding the button.

Cool, thanks! Apart from that, its all going ok so far - but there does seem a lot of cables floating around, so there maybe a question incoming later about that!
Only install the cables that you need into the PSU - so don't worry if you have a pile of redundant ones; it's to be expected.

*Look at labelling on each end of the cables.

Sorry, another question. I've just plugged the cables into the back of the PSU - the big one is for the MOBO ATX Power, the two CPU ones is for the CPU Power - and the remaining PCI-E ones are for the GPU. Is this correct?

Yep, you can get away with one lead for the RTX 2070 - using the splitter on the cable to fill all slots (benefits of a quality PSU).

Actually, scrub that - use two independent cables for the RTX2070 - safer option even though your PSU would cope. Cable tie the loose ends that dangle.

It's the better/safer option and will reduce troubleshooting options if you have issues once built.

Right, I'll try that, thanks.

Last question, as I'm probably going to turn in (its been a draining and stressful evening), looking at my wiring diagram in my MOBO manual, I need to put these all in the right way (duh), so is the HDD LED right hole the plus, and the left the minus? If thats the case, I'll need to reverse it around.

You may have a handy adaptor that makes it easier - if not you'll have to connect them directly into the motherboard.

Look on the back of the plastic (opposite side) of the connectors/writes - can you see a liitle embossed triangle? If you can that's your positive connection.

Don't worry, you can't do any damage...

Edit: on my stupidly small tablet so hard to type. Would normally upload image.

Thanks for the help last night, sorry to be a pain with my stupid questions! I'll be back at it later when I finish work. I've pretty much got everything plugged in now I think, there appears to be lots of fan cables still, so I need to give that some thought.

I think this is my main worry, I spent ages trying to work out where to put my hands on the motherboard, I was always scared I was going to put my thumb on something delicate - I think I handled it more carefully than when my first born popped out.

I'm sure all the components are actually fairly robust, but I'm not taking any chances!
