Police bust gang behind fake Lego brand in £23m raid

Lego's China and Asia Pacific vice-president, Robin Smith, has been quoted as saying the counterfeit products could be a safety concern for consumers.
And what makes the counterfeit lego a safety concern and not there own lego

While the criminal gang deserve to be punished for their copywrite infringement, I don't see why people are so happy about this news in the Lego thread and online. All that has happened is 3000 people are now without jobs and a lot of poor kids around the world no longer have a cheaper alternative to the massively over priced Lego brand and Lego get a slight increase in profits. Yey?

Are they massively over-priced, tho? From what I've read the cheaper alternatives are nowhere near as good quality. Ie, don't fit together properly, less durable, etc.

Looks like there are very few human workers needed for making the real lego
Inside a Totally Modern Lego Factory: Robots!

lot of Christmas trees probably had Lego presents under them a few days back, but it was not Santa’s elves who produced the popular building blocks.

In fact, neither elves nor humans have much to do with the production of Lego stuff nowadays, because the automation force is strong in this company.

A recent Daily Mail story (Inside the ‘top secret’ Lego factory in Denmark, Dec 26) featured the new toys made for the Star Wars movie and mentioned in passing that the company employs more than 200 designers,
but the manufacturing plants are “manned by robots but supervised by two people.”

Below is the Lego factory in Billund, Denmark, where one human worker is visible

Look at a Lego set and the price they charge and you tell me? They are Massively overpriced for what it actually is you're buying. A few bags of plastic parts that are churned out in their billions by automated machines. Their profits must be insane.

I'm guessing a lot of the cost is R&D as well, which Lepin bypassed by copying. Plus all the licence fees, which again Lepin doesn't have. I'm not saying it was right what Lepin were doing, but I don't get the joy people have in seeing them go down. Unless you have shares in Lego, I don't understand the loyalty to them. Some of the Youtube comments I read you would think they were going to get a share of the extra profit.

I bet the counterfeiters were bricking it.

Yeah, they are pretty much crap. Not even guaranteed to be the correct colour pieces. Friend was given a couple of sets as a joke, built and some of the pieces that should have been grey were orange, amongst other issues.

He even bought the bootleg Millenium Falcon UCS for gits and shiggles, and it was indeed dreadful. But much cheaper than the official one.

Not sure how to feel about this. . Mr lego "we spend millions advertising" you are screwing us.. Mr countifiter "it hurts no one ".... Quick thoughts are no one was hurt but long game is countifiters destroy the lego franchise ..

This is a total non-story, or at least a PR spin. Knock off stuff including Lego is everywhere in China, not just weird shops but proper legit stores in tourist areas etc.

Took a photo of this on my last visit. Seems legit.
