Hi all

Built a new machine today, new parts except psu and gpu

9700k
Aorus master
16gb 2x8 vengeance pro rgb 3200mhz
Evo 970 m.2 500gb
Inno3d Rtx 2080ti
Corsair ax850
Evolv x
Phanteks th-pc14pe 140mm air cooler

When I hit the power button I get power to the system for 1 second then it powers off and loops this 10 times, then just stays off. Cpu led is lit red during the one second it boots. Old pc the psu came from had failed so I tried another psu and got the same result.

Any ideas? I have never had a system behave like this before I am a bit stumped.

Tomorrow I will be removing everything from the case and testing on a cardboard box but just wanted to check if anyone knows what might be happening

Thanks in advance

Brad

Can take GPU out and try the onboard graphics.

How old is the PSU, what CPU cooler and which drives (apart from the M.2) and Windows version?

Cooler is phanteks th-pc14pe 140mm air cooler. Fan is a 3 pin on the cpu fan header. Also tried with a 4 pin to 3 pin adapter. Fan spins up on the 1 second power cycle.

Psu is about 6 years old but as I said I have tested with an additional psu and got the same result.

All standoffs are pre fitted to the case none missing all mobo screws are in.

No other drives and no windows as it hasn't posted yet.

As mentioned I will test the board outside of the case tomorrow with cpu and ram only. 1 stick at a time and all that jazz. I doubt very much it is a memory issue.

Tested out of case with no ram, same issue, have reseated the cpu and0
checked pins. All good, same issue. I bought the cpu at overclockers and board on amazon not sure how to diagnose further to find out which of them it is.

Check that there is not a standoff/bump with thread in the wrong place
Had a case like this ages ago, standoff in non standard position(ended up having to put insulation tape over it to make it work :)
EDIT: Too late with my suggestion i see:)

Read quite a few horror stories about Amazon and mobos,if i was a betting man i would put money on the mobo being a `returned` item

I know what you mean about amazon. I have had that before however the packaging and all the protection was in perfect condition. Usually when they are returns you can tell by the creases in the antistatic bag.

Anyone have any ideas how I can narrow this down between the cpu or mobo? I have no other boards or cpus to test with. I can get a new board from Amazon today but not sure what happens if I send the board back faulty and it turns out it's not

amazon are normally great with returns so just order a new board, chances are its the board and not the cpu. We hear about new boards having issues much more than a new CPU

Got a new board coming tomorrow. Will add some updates then. Checked online further and seen a few posts with similar issues but no single clear fix. I am going to test boot with out cpu cooler because one of the other people had an issue with their back plate causing a problem, so I'm just going to see if i can get more than 1 second of power to the board without the backplate. I also have some Dominator Platinum DD4 which I will test with too. This is so unbelievably stressful I always have the worst luck with new builds I have always managed to have a least 1 defective component. If I wasn't so in to it I would have given up years ago.

Well tried the original board again tonight with the backplate fully removed 1 stick of ram and same issue. Will update when new board arrives tomorrow.

Got new board and tested started of case. She is alive! Booted to Windows and got an A0 code on the mobo at desktop is this normal?

A0 - IDE initialization is started.

Cheers

IDE Initialization started just means that the motherboard has reached the point where it hands over control of the hardware to the OS. It just means it's working as intended (googled it lol)

Nice one, glad its sorted
