Hi all,
No tax as SORNed and MOTed today. Do I tax it today or wait until a fresh month starts tomorrow?

It's not on the road etc until I tax it. But will I lose a months tax if I do it today or wait until tomorrow?

No you won't - only works like that for cancellations as DVLA like shafting people. You'll get a years/6 months tax to the day

Cool .Thought I read somewhere they charge you from the start of the current month. I.e. April 1st. Money's always taken out at start of month regardless of when I tax it.

Yeah I think what I said was right as it worked like that when I did mine.
When I SORN'd my current car I lost the remaining part of the month (half way through) and the refund was from the start of the next month but I haven't retaxed yet. I'll have a quick google

Hmm some sites are saying that what you said is correct ie it starts from the first of the month but struggling to find a recent article as tax/VED laws and rules keep changing. Maybe someone else can advise?

I taxed my bike on Friday and pay by DD, the first payment will be taken 13th may and is for 2 months. Then the payments revert to the 1st of the month and are the normal single month price. In total I pay 11 installments, if I cancel my DD after the 11th which is in March next year then I'm only taxed until the end of March.

Does this mean I'd have been better off waiting until tomorrow to tax it? I honestly can't be bothered figuring it out before a bucket of coffee :o :D

Wait until tomorrow as tax is backdated to the first day of the month you buy it in, so buying today you pay for a month of April for one days use.

Unless there'e been a drastic and undocumented change, this is the case.

Edit: Car I taxed on friday, was taxed as of 1st April, so it is not done to the day it is still done by the month as it always has been.

It just continues from the expiry date of the old one. It's not like the TV license where you pay for 12 months but actually get 11 :p

Yeah it is done by the month regardless of what day/month you want it to run from - I delayed picking my truck up by a couple of days as it wasn't worth paying ~£25 for a couple of days.

Taxed it tonight and it backdated it to 1st May.:)
