Recently having to make the switch from console. New-ish to the PC scene in general so thought it would be good to get other opinions.
Unfortunately it’s not realistic for me to be able to, or feel comfortable, with getting a full PC setup so I’ve been looking at the more powerful gaming laptops since I’m a sucker for high frame rates on good graphics. I’ve heard some good and bad things about the both of these but they seem like the big standout heavy hitters that have been told to me this far.
Assuming both were at their maximum spec or around about that, what would be better?

Alienware max spec seems to be running RTX2080, both laptops have 1080p 144 hertz panels, the highest processor is an i9 for the Alienware, an i7 for the Asus while the asus also runs an RTX2080 but I think it’s the Max Q version. The Alienware can also come with an i7 or an RTX2070 configuration too if that’s something to account for.

On the other hand if you’ve got any suggestions for laptops outside of these I’d love to hear them

All Alienware models with RTX GPUs are Max-Q (aside from the new Area 51M that has a standard Max-P GPU).

What's your budget?
What games will you be playing?
What size 15" vs 17"?

The Max-P 2080 will give you 144fps in most AAA games @ 1080p @ high settings, ultra settings should still give ~100fps.

The Max-Q version will not.

I’m mainly going to play FPS games or games like For Honor so frame rate is a big thing. The larger 17 inch screen is preferred but I’m willing to compromise on it, the budget is anything up to around 5 grand USD but since I’m in the UK there might be some stuff to look at if I have to order from America etc.
Thanks for the help

15" and not 17" which is a shame. not sure if your able to claim VAT back if your going back state side ?
Thanks for these, when I’ve got a little more time I’ll definitely check out the specs. Yeah the screen is a shame but I reckon there might just be problems mass-producing the laptop 240 hertz screens

The Asus comes with a free backpack, mouse, and headset so I've included wireless mouse, headset and a wenger backpack in the Clevo price.

The Asus comes with a 512GB NVMe SSD and a 1TB SSHD, whereas the Clevo comes with 2 x 1TB NVMe drives in RAID 0 as a primary drive for games and apps, a 1TB SSD for media, and a 2TB SSD for backup.

The Asus has the Intel Core i7-8750H 6 core, 12 thread, 9M cache, whereas the Clevo has the desktop CPU I9-9900K with 8 cores, 16 threads, and 16M cache.

So if performance is your pursuit the Clevo wins hands down.

The only reason I would buy an off the shelf notebook these days is for form factor.

You realise i'm now going to be able add- 'self-proclaimed' - before aficionado now :D

/offtopic - finally read the whole MSI debacle - Jesus! (i'll bump your thread.)

Kudos, for sticking with it - even when you were probably the best compensated (can't imagine why).

It will be interesting watching how the US class action plays out, especially as this seems a risky play by MSI - even if they do intend to settle eventually (guessing). The precedent they seem to be desperately avoiding must have larger ramifications - but with the intense scrutiny they're under, all be it from a niche audience (Tech heads), still seems a risky PR balancing act.

Thanks a huge amount for this, I’ll probably end up going for the Clevo. Cheers for all your help
