Walking as a hobby - who does it?

At the risk of topic drift. £9 for a 5 mile journey!
And there are people out there who think we should all give up private car ownership and use Ubers (or Whatever) instead!

An average car can easily cost £9 per day just to own (depreciation, insurance, tax, maintenance) that's before you even buy fuel to get anywhere.

Grabbed an Uber yesterday morning for a 5 or so mile trip into Edinburgh City Centre, off peak, £9ish, done.

For the journey back, being around rush hour time, the potential charges jumped to £35 - £40  could have taken the bus or train but on this occassion I walked.

I'd consider myself reasonably fit with no ''issues'' as such but I've not done this sort of distance by foot in years and the chances of it happening again are pretty low. I do drive, but without my car at the moment and would usually be my first point of call.

Fast forward to the hiking forums out of curiosity and there are folk doing more than triple the distance a day, over the course of a few weeks, I understand Charity movements etc but this is more aimed at distance walking voluntarily. People have of course being doing this for as long as we can remember but who here does it now?

I figured that you don't truly realise the extent of it all until you put in a few miles yourself!

I'm tired now and think I've done my bit for the environment :o.

Where about did you start your journey?

Just got back from a holiday in New York. We walked on average about 8 miles per day (over 5 days). As it was a holiday we hadn't really taken the correct shoes or clothing for it so our feet were sore... but it kept the pizza weight off a little.

I love walking and will try to get a 5 to 7 mile walk in every other weekend.

Merchiston to South Gyle (Shopping Centre), sounds like a daily commute for some and a walk in the park for the regulars.

I agree with the view that’s it’s definitely something to consider if you have the time on your hands, even if it’s once a week like a few have already mentioned, especially with the health benefits of it. The landscape just isn’t there in London unless you venture a good few miles outwards beforehand.

I can't drive due to medical issues. So I have to walk everywhere and I don't mind for the most part because I love podcasts and audiobooks.

But also my wife and I are avid walkers as a hobby. Will be walking this weekend, did 16 miles on Easter Sunday.

I enjoy walking in the countyside especially when it's hot and sunny, I generally go for long walks two times a weeks. When ever I go on holiday I always walk around exploring for myself I had so many interesting in counters and met a lot of people doing this, much better than getting tour bus or following a guide

I don't mind walking but I like biking better.

I'm unfit so I can't go very fast, but it gets me around.

I started walking on a weekend with the GF a few months back. Not exactly exciting but 4 - 8 miles on a Sunday is OK and inspired us to get NT membership. I also started walking further during the week to a further tram stop for work in order to help burn calories as part of my weight loss efforts. Not sure I classify it as a Hobby though but maybe I should?

Given I am 40 and never learned to drive/hate cars I walk everywhere that I feasibly can. I used to run 30/40 miles a week but I just dont have the motivation for this any more but I do still like a good walk a couple of times a week, nowhere near as much benefit (although less impact on my knees!) but its still enjoyable when the weather isnt horrific, and its better than sitting at home eating yet another packet of crisps.

I used to walk a dog for 12hours a night did that for 7 years.

No idea why but on my days off I used to go hill walking in Wales and Lake District for fun and relaxation.....

Nothing formal. However, I do enjoy a stroll. Definitely one of my favourite pass times. Lots of greenery in my local area.

I don't know if I'd call it a 'hobby' but if I don't go for two or three walks every day, I get restless.

Since 10th July 2013 I've walked

That's an average of about six and a half miles/day.

I guess it's more lifestyle than hobby.

I used to walk to work 30mins each way did wonders to keep my weight down and fitness levels up. But changing jobs meant i had to commute via car. Since i no longer that that level of exercise i've gained weight! Been meaning to pick it up again around national parks as there are so many dotted around the UK but with my daughter starts complaining about 10mins in. Kids these days if its not on Youtube they don't want to know.
