Different pay scales in work.

Change your gender identity* to that of a woman and then claim gender discrimination. *Just your "identity" - no need to ditch the sausage & berries for a pornish pasty etc.

When i first joined this company years ago 3 of us joined on the same week doing the exact same role.

They paid us £25k, £30k, £35k all for the exact same job. Some people just get shafted

Yeah my company over pays managers and adequately/under pays underlings.

Its resulted in so many people leaving (Inc myself) that there is one manager for every subordinate.

Not surprising everyone who has left is on the doing side.

Unfortunately the managers are nearly all. Internally promoted and thus shouldn't really be people managers. However they are all still here as the pay is too good.

I didn't realise this until I looked for jobs. Got. Told we were going to pay you X.. Don't leave.

I have too much moral fibre for that. So I'm moving on. I'm glad I'm not institutionalised though.

Not long ago we got Exposed to the salary costs of the Business. There's a massive gap for so many people. Fascinating

I was in the exact same situation as you years ago. Member of my team left, new job ad out for the role paying a few £k more than I was on. Handed in my notice very soon after.
This is the best overall course, just get my details updated and go wot work finding something else now.
I kinda want to bury thinking about it as its a waste of energy.

They have told me the new person will have a different skill, in a room of 3 people, I will believe this when I see it.
No raise. Will go find another job.

Did you not ask what that skill was or what it is they want that new person to do that they believe you can't currently do?

Some (actually lots of) people don't ask for more during the hiring process.

The company aren't going to just give you a pay increase out of the goodness of their heart, you're going to either have to ask nicely or threaten to leave and maybe even make arrangements to leave. It's one of the arguments why women are generally paid less they're less likely to do those things if they're feeling settled.

Mine gave me a 10% raise last year, out of the blue. Nicer than the standard 2% :D

I know this is utter BS to avoid giving me the same wage.

Well yeah of course it is. Did you tell them that (diplomatically), did you ask what the additional skill was?
They did make a mention of some upcoming things, so either they have some new projects in the pipe line etc.
Surly I would think that asking me if I could do the work then a promotion would be an option most would want to go for.
I just feel more belittled by it, and feel more it doesn't matter if they offer something, I dont want to work for them ( they have pulled some very shady stuff in the past).
I've decided to tell myself I deserve better lol.

I have asked for a meeting with the manager as to a reason for the difference
The most likely reasons is that there is either a shortage of people with your skillset looking for jobs (and so they know if they advertise at the normal rate they won't get any interest) or they need to fill the position ASAP, either way they are most likely advertising above the going rate in order to convince people currently employed elsewhere to jump ship.

Keeping this as brief as possible.
One of our graphic designers is leaving where I work, I do the same job with the exact same responsibility etc.
As he is leaving an ad is made looking for a new designer, the pay in the Ad is 2.5k more than what i currently make.
I have asked for a meeting with the manager as to a reason for the difference, does anyone have any tip as the best way to approach this?

Speaking as a manager most jobs have a range (at least in bigger companies) with a low, mid and high point. I would guess you've got into the role at the lower end of the scale for whatever reason and they are advertising the role at the mid point.

Ask for a review and ask why the salary is higher and come with a case as to why you should be moved up. If the company value you and you've proved yourself should be a fairly easy discussion to have.

Equal of job does not mean equal of skill, something forgotten these days. I do the same job as 2 of my co-workers but they are both more skilled machine operators then I am and so get paid more money.

This is honesty and this is right imo, I have no delusion that I am equal to them because every day we do the same job. An example scenario, we import our programs as step files and once imported they can be saved locally at the machine. So if our network went down and we can't import our programs that means we have to create and write programs at the machine and that means I'm stuffed because I don't know how and I'll need assistance from the boss or my 2 co-workers.

In roles where salary is negotiable the best way to get a raise is more often than not to move jobs.

Its like utilities and car insurance.... You often don't get rewarded for 'loyalty'.

If you are not both willing and able to walk away from what they are paying you currently if they won't pay you any more then then they somewhat have you over a proverbial barrel.

Sometimes it's clear-cut as left wing vs right wing.

Where I work atm is fairly left wing and everyone of the same rank gets the same pay scale albeit small yearly increments pending good appraisals.

Previous place I worked was about as right wing as it got. Some were born-again Christians. The director hated women, blacks, non-believers etc. Whenever there was a redundancy round, he would let go of the minority groups first. I was a 1st/2nd line tech there with start salary £13500 increasing to £14750 6 years later. I only stayed this long because of lack of IT jobs in the area but I was still looking around. They then recruited another 1st line tech and started him on £15000... because he was a believer. The company folded 1 month later :p

Hope the meeting goes well OP and you get a pay bump. I'm unfortunately in the position where its a strict pay grade and i cant challenge what im being paid as im already top end of my pay grade and they won't create a new job in the next hrade for me despite what i do being outside my job description but fitting the next grade up.

Edit: Not to forget im vastly more knowledgeable and competent than the majority or the people i work with that are also at the top end of the grading in my area... not bitter at all lol

You: Babes, not cool.
Manager: Well, this is for a slightly different role and requires an expanded skillset.
You: Should I stand or bang, or stand and bang? Questions, you see?
Manager: Uh huh. We're looking for new people. I'm glad you picked up on this from the description.
You: NOBODY PUTS BABY IN THE CORNER!
Manager: YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
You: THERE IS ALWAYS MONEY IN THE BANANA STAND!
Manager: AND LIKE THAT ... HE'S GONE.

Holy ****, I would watch the hell out of this movie :rad:
This was good. I like.

What people fail to understand is the salaries are negotiable and companies are happy to pay people different amounts. there is nothing wrong with that.

i get paid a good 20K more than some others in my company, but I have just asked for more money and justified it by having higher living costs. Someone earning less money but has no kids, wife, and is happy with a cheap rental will have far more net savings at the end of each month.
