Have I lost this money?

I don't get how the police/banks/whoever aren't able to trace the person given that they have the account number and sort code. I know it's only £120 in this instance but if they're doing it to a lot of people, it's going to add up very quickly.

How good a friend is this person? I know it wasn't directly his fault but it was indirectly given it was a result of his weak account security.

I'd suggest to him that you go halves on the loss or at least get him to take you out for a few drinks to help you drown your sorrows. But I also wouldn't fall out with him over it.

I ended up contacting NatWest (my bank) on the advice of PayPal, PayPal rekon they can see what else they can do if The bank can't help.

The bank have submitted a scam case that can take 4 to 5 working days, on a best endeavors basis, if the account has money in it I may get something back. I'm not holding much hope but it's more than I thought could be done.

I can't get over how stupid and foolish I've been it's so ridiculous.

They were using an online account called N26 apparently.

Scammers would normally go for a lot more ie £1000+

I think you actually got conned by your friend.

I might be wrong

Some scammers go for smaller amounts knowing they will more easily fool people. Not many people would transfer 1K to a friend based on a facebook message, perhaps over an in person chat at the pub and explaining why they need the money and how they would pay back at the next payday or 2 etc. For 120, most people could do that without worrying too much and would havew the money in their account.

I still can't believe how pathetic I was been, literally I was thinking I'll do it to be nice to a friend even though this "friend" I've not spoken to for years and I just didn't want to be arsy to someone who was generally ok. And this thought completely eradicated any thought process of thinking this is dodgy, wondering why the transaction came through so fast, wondering why it wasn't in his name etc...

I've had a virus for a couple of days and stuck in this box of a room perhaps I'm loosing the plot.

Maybe your friend should ask others he's friends with if they've been contacted by this scammer too. Or if you have mutual friends to also ask.

Either it was a legit scam.

Or your friend needed £120 but didn't want to pay you back.

You haven't got a leg to stand on I'm afraid.

The same happened to myself years ago through Instagram.

A scammer had a fake designer clothing business on Instagram and needed 'workers' as his PayPal was apparently 'maxed out'. He promised big profits but obviously that never happened.

Customers would send me money via PayPal for clothes which were never even sent. I would then transfer the Paypal funds into my bank account then transfer them into his bank account..... (I was basically the middle man)

When the customers never received their goods (which were never sent) they would then raise a Paypal case against MY Paypal.

The scammer got away with it because the funds were withdrawn from Paypal into my bank account. I tried contacting Paypal but they said as it was a bank transfer nothing could have been done.

It was so much I had to set up a bloody payment plan with Paypal to pay the negative funds off!

I was young and dumb, really infuriates me when I see a scam like this now.

Wow......... i wouldn't admit that to anyone out of shame personally. you have bigger balls than me im guessing lol

Damn that sucks. I was done so hard over Xmas on PayPal. I had a paypal account for years and never had any issues.

I was at work driving around seeing patients and I was getting PayPal transaction emails one after the other, multiple ones from Russia, Brazil, UK, Mexico, i was thinking this is bs, can't be right so I checked my linked bank account and sure enough money was coming out of my bank account in real time, I couldn't believe it. They took about 300 quid over the course of 20 minutes.

I was trying desperately to freeze my paypal account but they have no facility to do this, I was trying to empty my bank account so they couldn't take anymore, ******* nightmare.

I got on the phone to paypal who stopped it there and then, it took about 2 weeks but PayPal finally got me the money back.

What ****** me off is why weren't these transactions flagged? I can be using PayPal on a genuine UK site and I get a text message "Was this you? Y to confirm N to deny" but Ivan and Juan from across the world can take money out without me getting a message?

Anyway, long story short I figured out that it was my nephew. He had been playing Fortnite on my computer when I was at work and logging on to dodgy sites, stupid things that promise a skin if you click X link etc so that's obviously they got it.
