Adverts coming to core google apps

I'm on a Google Apps account for my domain, which means I can use Gmail for emails and thankfully don't see any ads (unlike standard Gmail accounts).

Google has a tightrope to walk here - they need to balance things carefully so any ads don't look like they're invading a user's personal space. I can deal with ads in YouTube, but static ads within apps might be a bit much for me.

Only mentions the Google app as far as i can see after a quick read. Which is fine, you can easily not use that app. As long as ads don't start popping up on my settings page for instance im happy.

Maps is mentioned in the Hexus article which is bit of a bummer. Still I don't use it that often and if it gets too annoying, I'll have to find an alternative.

I do use maps a lot, as a Satnav every day.
It will just allow competitors to move in. If ads start annoying me i will just stop using Google stuff.

I imagine it'll be like Waze which tells you to drive to a local shop to buy this new amazing offer.

I.e. Item X was 19.99, now 13.99! Drive here now?

But I suppose any alternative without ads would be subscription based because maps always need updates/live info to make them useful. I don't think a one off payment for an app is going to cut it in this case.

I suppose they could introduce a subscription for Android as an option instead of ads.

I've never come across this and use Gmail as my only mail app
