Bank - joint account

On a high jacking nature.

With Starling. Can you name accounts? My first direct account has about 7 different accounts. As a combination of joing, savings, spending etc. But without being able to allocate them a name it gets confusing to know which is used for what.

With starling you don't have separate accounts to do that, you can set up goals in the same account and then transfer into the goal, the money is in the same account but is earmarked for your goal so you can't see it when you are looking at the current balance. I think it works really well, and is an excellent 21C feature to a bank account.

As has already been said just get a credit card that gives rewards you will actuallyuse. Me and the ball and chain both have Virgin Atlantic credit cards and we put everything on them and pay it off straight away. Its only taken 18months for us to get enough air miles for flights to Vegas (have to pay tax and duties) for £243 each.
As long as you just use it for things you actually need and pay it off its a win win.

Why not use a charge card (Amex etc) - put your food on that for the month, then it's a single direct debit to clear it at the end of the month. Way less hassle than getting another bank account just for a food bill.

Also gets you points etc for future purchases/flights etc

Is a charge card way less hassle than getting another bank account? They are both about the same amount of hassle (negligible) from what I remember. Also, both owners of a joint account can view the account online whereas the credit cards I have my wife is considered a second cardholder and can't see the account online. I imagine this is the same for charge cards. So, joint bank account is a good route to take.

DON'T use joint accounts, not now, not if you get married, not EVER. Relationships these days cause at best a tenuous grasp on what's yours, don't make it easier for her to fleece you. If you think **** never happens, you need to smell the coffee ;) The lawyers will grab enough, keep a tight rein on your dosh, ALWAYS. Misogyny comes with age, trust me ;)
I knew there'd be a post like this, I just didn't expect it from GD's resident lady slayer. Is this a personal anecdote Chris or did you hear it from your mates (who don't exist) at your pub (which doesn't exist) ?

We just still have our own accounts..
Almost every DD comes out of mine and gf pays me a set amount every month

Does it really matter what each you do it?

That is how I do it. So we only have 2 accounts. You could in theory just get rid of the other halves and use the 1 account too. I suppose it helps people who don't know how to use Google figure it out. The majority of stuff asked on here can easily be googled or found on YouTube.

There was a guy in the ho.e section who had just bought a power tool then asking people what they use theirs for. I was seriously baffled by that one.

^^^ this, or just a credit card that collects points. Seems like a no brainier, just stick all the shopping/household stuff on a the card(s) and have a direct debit come out of the joint account that is kept for bills, household expenses etc...

I’d assume these setups with joint accounts you pay into and individual current accounts are for couples who are unmarried or who don’t have kids yet. Presumably you just move onto a joint account for both salaries once you have a family else you could end up with some situation where say the wife leaves her job after she gets pregnant and has less disposable income or relies on the husband paying her an allowance while he still maintains his separate accounts/savings.

We use Santander for our joint account. It’s the one that costs £1.00 a month can’t remember the name of it.

Money goes into it to cover monthly household bills, food, petrol, going out and any adhoc costs that crop up in the month.

The interest rate is non existent but then the money doesn't stay in there long enough to worry about it.

For our £1.00 monthly payment we get approximately £6.00 back on our household bills and anywhere from £0.00 to £20.00 a month back on restaurants and other cash back offers through the account.
