Well i say old motherboard, it's brand new just an old model, the ASRock 775i65G. I installed a BitFenix Whisper 550w as my PSU, however it doesn't come with the appropriate cables to connect to the motherboard. The mobo port is 20 pins, and the 12V port is 4 pins.

I thought it was best to get good quality cables rather than the cheapo ones on ebay, just to be on the safe side.. But do i need to get BitFenix cables that match my PSU, or will any cables be safe to use?

Unsure where on the power supply to connect the 12V port, the 3 pin sata/molex or 4 pin VGA socket? And where can i get them as struggling to find that or a high quality 20 to 20 pin cable.

The 24 pin cable should be a 20+4 pin so all you need to do is disconnect the 4 pin. Same with the 8 pin as it should be a 4+4 pin so you just disconnect the uneeded 4 pin. It tells you on the psu itself where each type of cable plugs in.

The 24 pin cable that came with the PSU doesn't disconnect, the other end does but it splits into 18+10. Ah i wonder if the 4 pin that disconnects from the 20 can be placed into the 4 pin port above. Though i'll need to find a 18 to 20+4 cable as the connector on the PSU for the motherboard is 18 pins.

Thanks Esa, though i made a mistake initially, there is only 18 pins on the PSU motherboard port and not 20, so i'll need a 18 to 20 pin cable, or more ideally 18 to 24 (were the 4 pins can detach)

Those connect to PSU's cables.

And as ruler never connect any other cables than those bundled with PSU into PSU's modular cable connectors.

Ok, but how do i connect the 24 pin end into the motherboard, if it only accepts 20 pins, will i overlap it, since i can't split it off? (Oddly it says it's a 20+4 cable in the PSU user manual, when it's no such thing)

Yes i know.

But, as i say, PSU motherboard slot only has 18 holes for the cable, whilst at the other end.. the motherboard itself only has 20 pins, there's no way the 24 pin cable can fit in anywhere.

It's an extension cable. Plug it into the cable that comes from the PSU. Don't ever plug anything directly into the PSU ports, except the cables that came with the PSU.

Have you tried fitting the 24 pin cable to the motherboard so that the redundant 4 pins are overhanging. This should work on most boards but the awful position of the 20 pin slot on your board means that area is cramped. It's worth a try though before you buy extra cables. The 8 pin looks like it should split into 4+4 pins going by pictures I have looked up. If it doesn't then try the same thing with that so that the spare 4 pins are overhanging although space on your motherboard is tight in that area as well. Both cables should only fit one way around and only use the pins you actually need so don't try forcing them into the slots. It's all very well buying extension cables and they do work very well but they have a downside in that you now have a extra length of cable to hide away. This is fine if you have a nice spacious case but if your case is from the same era as your motherboard cable management wasn't even considered back then and the last thing you want is a mess of cables messing up the airflow in the case.

The psu end of the cable should have a 18 pin connector and a ten pin connector both are clearly marked on the psu casing where they plug in. The 8 pin connector plugs into the one on the psu marked CPU.

Oh i see now. Never knew you could do that.

Just tried it, and it fit! Also didn't know you could do that, but makes sense now with it being a 20+4 cable, didn't know they could be joined up aswell. I had to remove the fan from the Cooler Master though and put it on the other side. I thought i had another bag of cables somewhere, came across it and low and behold found a 8+8 cable where one end can be split into 4+4. so that's it sorted. Thanks a lot, you saved me time and money :)
