I've got the following kit (all bought from OCUK a good few years ago!):

Q6600 @ 2.40GHz,
ASUS P5K Pro mobo,
4GB Geil DD2 800
Antec 900 Case with Corsair HX520 PSU
Geforce 7600GS x 2

As I'm in the process of ordering a new PC for my son I figured it might be worth looking at what could improve what I have...if anything? It's currently got 2x500GB HDD but I have a 500GB SSD I can slot in and re-install on. I currently just run Linux on it but it seems Linux gaming may have come on a little so was wondering if worth upping the GPU to enable some play? Currently has two old 7600GS in as I used to run four monitors. Only need two now.

Or would it be better to just slot a new set of kit in the same case?

Any suggestions please?

If it's basic home office stuff with less taxing games then some extra memory and clocking the CPU. If you're getting back into gaming, 'proper', then a new build from the ground up ideally. (the q6600 was a mighty CPU! Was it ever clocked?)

EDIT: Miss read your question - what games are you thinking of playing?

Quite fancy the Total War variants (not played them since they came out!) but some more recent FPS stuff as well. Doesn't have to be on top top settings though. Just don't have the budget for a full build so was hoping to re-use some bits...

Hesitant to recommend the below because of the systems age - but the card could be moved onto another spec if your present system died.

For the little gaming you do i would clock the Q6600 and stick in a GTX 1050Ti and another 8Gb of memory (cheap). But you should know that your system will be on borrowed time and waking it up from its slumber may make it spit its dummy out.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £149.89 (includes shipping: £9.90)

***But of you start getting serious about your gaming you will need to build a system from the ground up.

Possibly £400 to buy new bits and re-use what I can... Ish... :)
Your PSU makes that budget tricky - ideally you would change it as it's paid its dues.

You could get core components with a PSU and save for GPU - but would see little gaming benefit until you got your new GPU. But you could sell the 2 free games for ~£50 to put towards a new GPU on a couple of months time?

Example:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £386.06 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Seeing as I'm just about to drop £700 on a gaming PC for my lad I think it would be silly to do too much to my kit. I might get the kit to add the SSD I have to my kit and up the RAM to 8GB (max the mobo supports apparently). Should give a little boost to performance until it dies... :)

why not give your kid your current system. just needs a new case and a clean up and no one will be the wiser :)

overclock the q6600 - with a decent cooler can hit 4.4ghz iirc
drop in 8gb ram
get a rx570 or rx580
pop in a 500gb ssd
and your old system is good to go tbh.
