Hi all, I hope you can help with what seems to be a simple matter, but I am not sure and cannot afford to buy the wrong equipment over and over.

I have just moved into a new property that has no internet connection however, my landlords do have internet access which they will allow me to use if I can get it to work through the thick wall from their office in my bedroom. They have a router with a Wifi ariel, I have the code and my phone and tablet connect but only if within a few feet of the wall.

I need to extend their signal about 5 metres through another wall to reach my lounge, can the range extender work even if the signal is very weak, i.e. will it boost the signal? My landlords have also agreed that if I need to drill a small hole in the corner of the wall I could pass a cable through and repair the cement, I then assume I can plug that into the extender, I hope to end up with the ability to wifi connect my devices in the lounge.

Your thoughts please, TIA

As long as there's some signal an extender would work. If a phone or laptop can get a useable signal where you're wanting to place the extender you should be okay.

I'd drill the hole and use Ethernet (and run it all the way into the lounge). Once you have an Ethernet connection you can connect a wireless access point or a wireless router.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply.

I don't mind the cable through the wall into the bedroom as it would be hidden by a dresser, but I was trying to avoid bringing it across the bedroom floor. The floor covering is old style flagstone and cannot be drilled besides, the cable (if glued) would look ugly in this exposed setting, this really would be a last resort.

I think I would go with the wifi extender but just in case, if I purchase a new extender and find it does not work and am forced to use the cable, can I assume the extender will accept a cable connection, again aware of cost and making a pointless purchase?

Many thanks

This may not be the product for you,

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/tp-link-re205-ac750-wi-fi-range-extender-nw-210-tp.html

but something similar could be.

That one uses 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies but cheaper ones can be had that only use the 2.4GHz.

The one linked there is also a 750Mbps version and for more money you can get a 1200Mbps one,the 2.4GHz only could run at 300Mbps or 600Mbps.

If I were you I would think about drilling the hole in the wall then plugging the cable into something similar to this and setting it up as access point instead of a range extender, that would mean the cable from the router next door would carry the signal until it gets to you then it works wi-fi only on your side of the wall.

If that works ok you could then either use wireless devices in your lounge or use another one of these to bring the signal in there and then run a cable to your tv or tv box or whatever you use.

You need to google wifi extender, then access point or WAP and have a read up.
