I need so help please guys I fairly new to pc gaming and I’m currently noticing I’m getting 100% cpu usage in games like fortnite and at times in destiny 2. My cpu is not the best I am wondering if it’s holding me back and causing me to get less fps and sometimes random stutters. Can anyone suggest a decent upgrade to my cpu which will fit my current motherboard and pair well with my GPU or is my system as good as it can be with the gear I’m running.
My specs are an i5 6400, gtx 1060 6gb 16gb ram.

The obvious upgrade is a 6700 if you can find one cheap but prices on Fleabay seem very silly - £150+.

But you've hit the right time to upgrade: the new AMD Ryzens will be here within days. Wait for the reviews then get yourself something with 8 full cores.

Same happened when I tested just four cores on CPU (4770K with hyperthreading disabled) with GTX 1070, in Fortnite. 100% CPU usage and stutters. You should set an FPS limit while you wait for Zen 2 reviews, so the CPU isn't worked to the max.

in theory your CPU should be fine with those games ..... Fortnite can be run on PHONES! couldn't comment on the other .

shows above threads are the issue, but as with any CPU Physical cores as ways better then logical ones :)

Speed of New Ryzen 3600 should play a huge part, then with the extra 2 cores will help additionally .

whats your GPU usage percentage ? if not reaching 100% then bump up settings

Four core/thread CPU can certainly be notable bottleneck for any modern game wanting more threads running without interruptions.
Switching execution between threads is in CPU core's time scale slow operation.
So even lighter background threads in bigger numbers can easily cause fps drops and such, when those interrupt execution of game's threads.

Now if all that background stuff in Wintoys10 PC were as light on resource use as Android...
And suspect Android Fortnite is in general lot better optimized and has had things stripped away compared to PC version.

Best to have both cores and threads.
Amount of background junk in PCs is only going to increase.

Thanks for the replies are Ryzen cpus good for gaming then? Ive only had intel. What sort of money do you think the new Ryzens will be I would also need a new motherboard I’m guessing if I upgrade to a ryzen how much do u think the motherboard and cpu would cost roughly to do. Also would this cpu be good if in time I decided to upgraded to a gtx1070 or 1080 or latest Equivalent I’m only really interested in gaming at 1080 but would like to try and hit 144fps more consistently.

Are there any adjustments to settings I could make in Windows 10 to help my cpu out.

You should set an FPS limit while you wait for Zen 2 reviews, so the CPU isn't worked to the max.

You can do this in-game, although Fortnite for example has limited choices for fps limit. Or through Afterburner + RivaTuner, or other. Lower the frames until you don't get 100% CPU usage and stutter.

Also guys if I do buy a new cpu and motherboard will I need to repurchase windows 10 I bought it on a usb pen from overclockers originally or can I just reuse this?

If you bought a full license it should be transferable. If you purchased an OEM license it may not be transferable. But a new license is only £15-£25 from resellers.

Thanks. Would you say It would be cheaper for me to get something like an i7 7700 cause I been reading I can maybe use my same motherboard with a bios update?

Exactly which motherboard do you have? Can you overclock? 7700 CPUs are much more expensive than the 6700 CPUs but only 7% faster according to CPUBenchmark.Net, and 10% faster when both are overclocked. And I'd be wary of used overclocked CPUs (i.e. the -K models). It might be worth checking if your motherboard will take a Xeon CPU with more than four cores.

Main thing is to stop useless background bloatware and such.
Unless you're careful it's easy to get dozens of useless bloatwares running on background the way lots software wants its always running background process.

Didn't Intel kill use of Xeons on desktop boards after Haswell to force people into paying extra for HyperThreading?
