What do you guys think is a fair price to fit a clutch kit to a Vauxhall Zafira?

Thought I'd ask here as my brother has volunteered me to help him and I've got loads on so thinking of just paying for it to be done but before I offer I thought it would be good to get a price in my mind.

Dont really have a go to local garage as I've been quite lucky with my car and just put it in for an MOT every year.

Quotes me £940 for clutch & flywheel. Doesn't specify brand of parts.

Had my clutch & flywheel done last year, genuine LUK parts (slightly better than oem)

All in with labour, £510.

You 2 above... Why is the flywheel having to be replaced?

Because it was knackered by not replacing the clutch on time ?

If it’s a diesel with a dual mass flywheel, they are effectively consumable items. Not sure what the situation is around petrols with DMFs but I gather that they’re less common on petrol engined cars. Solid flywheels are a different story though.

I had juddering when pulling away in lower gears on one of my previous cars so I had the clutch and flywheel changed - clutch itself was ok but the dual mass flywheel was knackered. Also had major juddering in lower gears on my wife’s previous car which was definitely DMF related. They’re usually knackered when you get juddering or you can hear them rattling.

Depending on mileage it may make sense to just change flywheel at the same time as the clutch because of the labour involved. There’s almost no extra effort involved to change DMF at the same time as the clutch.

For what reason out of interest?

It's possible to get hotspots or have excessive wear. Problem is if you need the car urgently -and say do the work over a weekend. You won't be able to inspect the flywheel until you've done a large part of the work, so it's easier to just buy and replace it as part of the process. Last thing you want to do is re-use the existing flywheel - put it back together and have issues that result in problems that mean you need to revisit it, or even worse - an unusable car.

It's probably a bit paranoid, but i've replaced the flywheel for every clutch job i've done, and given how unpleasant the jobs have been (longitudinal MX5 gearbox and PPF related fun, and 4WD transfer box Evo fun), i'm glad I did.

Generally it is better to replace the flywheel with the clutch plate the same time as the gearbox will be taken out, both will wear out roughly the same so to save you money in long run in labour you're better off changing both so they can wear out the same time.

Thanks for the replies.

I did my celica st202 clutch at 72k @ 15 years old. I only did the clutch and now its on 120k after 6.5 years with no issues. Clutch is a Exedy unit and I gave it plenty of stick. Just my 2 pence.

Good bit of site that I didn't know about! I'm due to get my timing belt done soon and quoting me just under £250 with a year warranty. Compare that
It's spot on, got my front discs and pads replaced for £135 without having to leave the house.

I did the flywheel on my ST220 along with the slave cylinder, was over £400 in parts alone for LUK bits. It was a pig of a job to do DIY so the logic was change the lot and it'll outlast the car. Same principal applies to paying a garage, it could easily be £300+ labour and you don't want to be paying it again in 12 months.

It was & extra bolts to do the flywheel on my car whilst the box was off. It added maybe 20 minutes to a job that took me 4 days lol

For me it was a case of the clutch needed doing (it was still on original at 115k). It's DMF and diesel and on my car they tend to need replacing around 130k. I do on average 13k a year so it just made sense to do it at the same time rather than do the clutch then the DMF just over a year later, incurring 2 lots of labour rates and losing the car for two days (1 each change)

Did the clutch on my Saab 9-5 last march. Close to £300 in parts. Genuine clutch and pressure plate with genuine clutch slave/bearing (sits inside gearbox). Flywheel was fine @140k as clutch had plenty of meat left on it. Just did it for peace of mind as I was putting in a new box.
