Anyone received any good deals lately?
Interesting, I'm in Southampton and on a new build development so have BT FTTP and Virgin Media available. I'm currently just out of contract with BT on their 330/50, anyone have any idea what the upload speed would be on VM 1gbps? I am hesitant to lock myself into a long contract when there are other independent ISPs rolling out dirt cheap 1gbps/1gbps services in Southampton. I've used VM for years in the past, they were okay but their upload speeds sucked hence me moving to BT.
Over the VM network, even with the latest iteration of Hybrid FTTP I can't see them pushing 1Gb symmetric. It will more than likely fall in line with other products and be a 10:1 so I'd expect 100Mb of upload to the Gb download "if" they can stick to the schedule.
That's that I feared. I'm sure by the end of the year someone will be able to offer me a faster service. Ideally either 1000/1000, or I'd be happy with 500/165 but at a more reasonable price. I have a feeling that VM 1gbp would be in excess of £70 a month.

not being funny here but who actually needs that type of speed? I'm on 350MB and I get more as i'm in a good area. i get around 375MB. i've thought of dropping to 100MB but you only save £10 a month so I've stuck with it. however i'm now starting to think you know what i might as well spend that £10 per month on spotify or something.
100MB should be enough for 5 person households. at best a person uses 20MB per netflix stream. if you do need to download a patch or a new game even on 100MB you will get it really quickly in comparison to a lot of people.
i have 375MB but I feel it's wasted. you could always go and grab a drink and a snack in the time it takes to download anything. we are talking small differences in the real world. it would be cheaper to just leave your pc on all the time downloading updates than to turn it on and have 500MB for instance on tap to download the update when powered up.
I've installed a single unifi ap (lite) and it's made a huge difference in the wifi range, and the android app is pretty nifty too. Now I'm wondering if it's worth disabling the wifi on the SH3 and just adding in another AP on the first floor, and while I'm at it I also wonder if it'd be better to stick the SH3 into modem mode and get another router?
Do it. I disabled the SH3 WiFi and I now use an Aruba AP with 4 external antennas. The difference is remarkable.
Oh and ditto for the router as well. I have my SH3 in modem mode and its connected to an EdgeRouter 4.
I'll check out the EdgeRouter. Do you have any issues with the SH3 as a modem?
None whatsoever. I get sync issues now and again but I think thats because of noise on the line / quality of the cable. They did fit some kind of booster / amplifier a while back that improved things a lot. But it operates very well in just bog standard modem mode.
Unfortunately I still have until December remaining on my contract before I can drop the VIVID 200. It's terrible to be honest. I assume on their edge firewalls they are QoS'ing the traffic as when I use a speed checker it absolutely flies. However real world, well I struggle to get above a quarter of their claimed speed.
I just had a flyer from Community Fibre popped through my letterbox. 1GB symmertrical, unlimited data / no caps for £35 a month. Sounds very tempting.
Why don’t you run Plex in the Cloud then? For general usage, 50mbps is perfect. I want the upload for my Plex server. I share it with quite a few people and my upload is the single biggest bottleneck by far. If I had faster upload I could increase the permitted quality per stream which means less transcoding which means less heat and power. I also back my server up to the cloud so backups would be quicker. I don't need 1gbps, I'd happily save money and get 500/500 but it seems to get the upload you need to pay for high download speed. Faster download speeds are handy though for the odd big patch or game download.
