Hi All.

I’m a newbie who wants a decent rig for gaming, browsing and general media.

I have a budget of £2500. I need everything. I would prefer higher than 1080p resolution, and super quick desktop function.

Can anybody help me and spec a set up, please.

Hi welcome

Here is a rough spec to give you an idea.

I wasn't sure if you needed a Mouse/Keyboard/Speakers and Win 10, so those can be added if need be as there is still £500 or so left to play with.

An RX 5700 XT would be the AMD equivalent, but I would wait for the better versions to appear if going for one of them. The 2070 Super is listed as pre-order, but they have been released so it is more than likely just waiting for new stock to appear.

The case is personal preference, so you might want something different to the one below.

You can go cheaper on the board with a B450, but the X570 means you don't have to mess about updating the bios and the potential issues that go with it.

I will tag @tamzzy @Plec as well for their take on things.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,975.73 (includes shipping: £15.90)

I'd be sorely tempted to use some of that left over budget to get a 34" Ultrawide Monitor, especially as it's pretty hard to add a few extra inches once you've committed to the smaller version. :p

Thank you both, it’s given some food for thought.

Would it be an idea to buy a second hand 1080ti instead of buying new a 2070s? Just in terms of performance rather than savings? I think the 3700x is the way to go as well. I’ll probably grab 16gb of DDR4 instead of 8gb. I’ve got my eye on the Samsung 34 inch curved so maybe the 1080ti would Compliment that.

Any other suggestions, I’m all ears.

Thanks.

Spec suggested seems to say 16 gb as in cheap 2 x 8GB ram. I'd say most here would go for £80ish 3200 or faster

Monitor is a personal inches thing. It is the one thing I invest in and keep for several years (unlike wives).

2nd hand graphics and upgrade later is always going to save a lot.

The 2070S is going to perform roughly the same as a 1080 ti. So I guess it depends on what you can buy a used gpu for, and if you are happy to have no/little warranty on it vs 3 years on a new card.

The spec I posted has 16GB Ram.

Thank you for speccing for me, it would have taken me weeks to figure out what was compatible.

Yes I see it was 16gb of ram, my eye sight isn’t the best ha.

On eBay, a used 1080ti 11gb are going for around £350-400 in some auctions. I have now purchased a 34 inch curved Samsung 3440x1440 monitor. Do you think the extra 3gb vram would be beneficial, or would you still get the 2070s if it was your choice?

Thanks

I'd go for a 2070 super, some newer games are making use of the turing architecture which will mean and 2070s beats the 1080ti in newer games.

I would stick with a new gpu if it was me. Sure you can save a few quid by going 2nd hand but if anything goes wrong with it you might not have a decent warranty. At least with a new card you can get 3 years or more warranty depending on the card you buy. Some Gigabyte models such as the Gaming OC/Aorus have 4 years.

The 8GB Vram should be more than fine. Article below is from 2015 but things haven't changed dramatically.

what's your budget, now that you've bought a monitor?
as above, get a new graphics card. don't spend a pretty penny for a card without warranty.

Yes that makes sense, thanks.

Thanks, that’s an interesting article. So architecture > vram, definitely worth getting the bestish newest then. Saves any hassle.

I don’t have a strict budget, I’m not poor and also frivolous.:DBut I like to think I’m getting some value and not paying extra hundreds for overclocks that I could do through AB etc.

This is the monitor I bought.

So as long as I can run all games at 100fps, I’ll be happy about that.

Thanks.

best value ryzen cpu
best value x570 board with wifi (drop to aorus x570 elite if don't need wifi - also has £30 steam voucher promotion with the aorus)
with the budget available, 2080 super can be specced. of course 2070 super is better value, but it's also slightly slower (up to you if you think the ~10-15% difference is worth the £150-175 difference)
best headset south of £100
best budget 2.1 speakers
not specced windows as you can get grey keys on the cheap
