Hi all,

I have an i7 6700k cpu and as far as I'm aware its a socket LGA1151, so I was thinking of upgrading to the i7 8086k it has a base of 4ghz but is Pre-binned 5.1GHz capable ( https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inte...e-socket-lga1151-processor-oem-cp-65b-in.html ), but when I asked via webnote how you go about overclocking it up to 5.1ghz or did the processor do this automatically when it needed more power, I was told that I would need a new motherboard, surely this is wrong advice, is it not the same socket?
Please forgive my ignorance :)

You are forgiven for being ignorant and the web note is in fact correct.

Your board will likely be a Z170 and to run an 8th Gen Coffeelake you need Z370 or Z390.

If you are looking at spending "that" kind of money right now, don't buy into an Intel. Look at an AMD 3600x as for similar cash (CPU&Mobo) you will get a far, far better and future proofed system.

Thanks Steveocee, that is just what the type of factual answer I was looking for, I thought I could have bought that processor and had a major upgrade without having to splash out on a mobo :)
