This is about 200 yards from me.

Everyone is safe, all 150 residents were evacuated.

I don't think there is going to be much left of it in the morning.

I remember about 20 years ago when lightning struck an old folks home opposite my old family home..... so many ambulances that night....

My wife's grandad has been in a nursing home for the past 18 months, until he died two weeks ago. I hadn't really thought about it before he went there, but the fire standards need to be so much stricter for these places, as there's just no possible way for the majority of residents to read safety.

Great that they appear to have done so this time.

I suspect (or at least hope) they do have plans in place and rehearse stuff like this. Plenty of residents will be able to get themselves out and the staff are well aware of the ones who'd need assistance.

The thing that would worry me more is natural disasters etc.. perhaps more of an issue in the US, but with something like hurricane Katrina or tornados etc.. but when there is something that affects the staff members homes/families too then their priorities can change and there might not be enough left to deal with the residents.

The staff can rehearse but the majority of the residents normally cannot. I would dispute your view that most can get themselves out - yes they can move but they need to be aware and orientated. There are too many variables to predict how any one situation could manifest.

The great contradiction of our time. Nursing homes mostly staffed by workers on minimum wage, filled by people paying £40k + a year. Boris has promised to sort it. Just like the last four Prime Ministers.

I think that's a bit patronising and plenty of residents of these places would certainly dispute that, they're mostly just old they might need some help with some things, they're not completely inept, stupid or have all lost their marbles. Most of these places are just care homes, the one in the OP seems to be individual flats even.

Sure if you were talking hospice, end of life palliative care type set up that people are in for a few weeks before passing away then yeah, but general care homes etc.. as per the one in the OP... my Gran was in one for years, they had plenty of social events for the residents, the majority had their **** together.

Mother was on about this yesterday but didn't know where it was. I think some of the people are being transferred to her residence.

Is that your drone footage, @OldCoals ?

It wasn't intended to be patronising. My wife's grandad was in one for a few years until recently, and 75% of the residents wouldn't be able to exit a room unaided in under two minutes.

Was watching the live stream last night, absolutely devastating for the residents who've lost everything.

Great to see the community has pulled together with multiple locations having collections and lifestyle center being full.

And the staff know and plan for it. Many of the beds in my aunt's care home were on wheels, for instance.

There are currently lots of United Utilities water tankers coming and going, given it has rained for about 12 hours I think they are still damping down.
