BMW 640D - First service cost?!

The oil shouldn't be more than £10 ltr then filters shouldn't be more than £60 for both. £135 max parts. Hours labour even main dealer shouldn't be more than £80 so with vat and disposal, if that is such a thing, you'd still expect £275-£300. £400+ is pants down :D
At a main dealer you'll be into 3 figures per hour for labour without even a hint of a smirk on their face.

Well down to £360 calling around dealers miles for oil and microfilters.

Now to see if I can get my local to come down....aiming for £350 but that might be pushing my luck

It is crazy, but the problem is what garages are basically doing is recovering the total service department costs via labour hours.
So a basic equation along the lines of Annual Department cost / expected chargeable hours = hourly rate
Your paying for part of the service manager, the receptionist, the fancy free coffee, a decent stock of parts etc etc

Indys etc don't have that whole setup to pay for, often not the specialised equipment either. Often only limited spares

Maybe the main dealers should have a servicing rate and a non servicing one, that way those who go elsewhere for servicing who often end up at main dealers for more complicated things would pay the same.

What a load of rubbish.

The service price he has been quoted is over the top, the first service on an N57 engined car is around £300.

When you say around £300 Fox is that Inc the microfilters?. £260ish for just oil/oil filter.

Local dealers not moving at all :( don't really fancy a 150mile round trip just to save £50

It's 291 with Microfilter and 129 (yes, really) without it.

Prices from the BMW service website for my 530d. Which has identical service requirements to the 640d as it's the same engine?

Maybe it's a 6 series tax on servicing?

All the online prices I'm getting are around £235ish for just oil+ £30ish for scope.

Oil+filters are between £350 and £380 plus scope

you do notice when microfilters are replaced though ... max power on blower is much more effective, and when you look at old filters you can see why.
I would do them every 6 months if I coud be bothered.

@[TW]Fox, @LordVader I had a discussion with my local place before I got rid of my 640d when they quoted more for servicing than on a 535d. They tried to say because it was a more expensive car it was more complicated - I pointed out it was literally the exact same mechanical systems. In the end they agreed to do it at the same cost but only after I literally laughed in their face.

they take quite a bit of oil don't they..

so probably 200ish for parts, 1hr labour and some vat + disposal and you're over 400.

nothing ridiculous.

it isn't a toyota yaris so servicing wont be £100.

he bought a diesel though which shows he knows nothing about cars apart from mpg.

he's likely saving himself nothing to be chugging along in a tractor engine when he could be enjoying the sound of a V8 petrol.

would you buy a diesel sports coupe?

or a diesel sports anything? apart from a range rover?

it's the wrong engine for that car. unlike a 5 series which isn't marketed as sporty unless it's the M5 which again isn't diesel

The 640d isn't a sports coupe. It's a GT. So completely sensible engine for the car.

A 6 series is just a big boat for wafting around in. I could happily live with a diesel in one.

Aren't Audis upcoming S6 and S7 diesel too?
