Dismissed Over Dogs Death.......

i turned my mobile off for 10 mins to be at my dads funeral.
Time is money, i imagine its the same in the cut and thrust world of the part time sandwich maker market too.

It's a tough business, but they really screwed this girl over.

How is she suppose to put bread on the table now? Without that job she has no way of making any dough.

I’m not the one who was sat at home crying over a pet. Get a grip.
brutal! while i'm certainly not what you would call an animal person, i recognise that some folk do get emotionally attached to their pets. just telling someone to 'get a grip' is a tad heartless do you not think?

Pets are family members, so to some people losing one is very traumatic.

If one of her parents had died, would they still say 'get cover or face dismissal'?
some people develop emotional attachments to all sorts of things, so where do you draw the line? i don't think making special cases for pets is realistic. should someone get time off for the goldfish they've had since they were a nipper? or the worm farm they've been tending to for years?

Really bad move by the employer, probably for the best she left them as seems they are not nice people to work for.

Hahaha okay FishFluff, I'm really quite the wimp because I care about an animal I've raised from being a few months old, this is honestly not even something I'm embarrassed about remotely. I broke up with my girlfriend of 8 years 6 months ago and didn't bat an eye lid if that helps my case.

He cant hear you, his massive testicles are getting in the way.

Should have phoned in sick as said.

I agree its horrendous losing a pet. Especially one such as a dog.
But for the employer it's a slippery slope to having people off for all kinds of reasons

Id have the day off too, but I'd have phoned in sick to avoid all this

Depends how many white lies had already been told for time off. Might have had one too many "called in sick" cards which is why no one was willing to cover for her, even for a genuine reason and why compassion was not granted. A news article like this usually publishes if the staff member was an angel to help their case/sympathy.

What wasn't mentioned in the article is that this was the 6th dog of hers to die in the last 3 weeks.

She's probably on a temporary contract anyway and may well have been unreliable in the past.

Yeah I think they were looking for a reason to get rid of her. The shop manager was being reasonable imo because they gave her the chance to look for some cover. The fact that she's been fired isn't the end of the world. She's a student. She can look for some more hours in the likes of Greggs, Costa or Nero.

I had 8 hours per week working in a Spar around my studies. Being ill or away meant going unpaid, and then either myself or the manager had to find a replacement to cover the shift.

No information about how much calling in this time was actually a deciding factor in them getting rid of her. Could just be the last thing rather than the only thing.

Given the choice between saving my cat's life and some random (human) stranger... you better believe I'm saving my pet.

Make of that what you will.

My employer gave me "special leave" when my horse died and I had to sort out arrangements regarding that. Just depends on if you have a decent employer and manager, and how much you are worth to the business.

Seems like you're a valued employee - sounds like she was in a low wage low barrier to entry role so you're instantly replaceable.

It’s not up to a worker to find cover, this is what their manager is for. This is why they get paid (to manage).

It ultimately comes down to the manager to get the work staffed, yes.

But you, the worker, can still get punished for creating a problem against your terms of employment.

In this case, wanting time off for an unacceptable reason. If you get the work covered and you present the problem and solution then management doesn't have a major reason to be unhappy.

Stinks... no point having a manager there if they not going to manage.
