Does a B450 board need a 2nd gen to update bios?

so I’ve now got my new board(Aorus M) which I will need to transfer my 2600 too, but I take delivery of a R3 1200 tomorrow to fit in my itx board, now I don’t know if gigabyte has any bios updates and if they are a necessity, but if they do and I wanted to update my itx then I wouldn’t want to swap out processors If I needed the 1200, I’m just wondering if it follows the same formula as the b350 boards needing 1st gen or because the b450 supports both it wouldn’t matter?

Speaking of updates, if there are any, will they support the 3rd gen? Future proof like option, just not up to date on what boards if not all have the bios update.

Your B450 will support both 1xxx and 2xxx CPUs out of the box. It'll need a bios update for 3000 series CPUs unless otherwise stated on the box

I just got a gigabyte b450 itx mobo from another supplier and they updated the bios for free when I asked. fitted a 3600 straight into it.

There are already BIOS updates available to support 3rd gen Ryzen CPUs, but you'll need to follow the steps per the Gigabyte support page because the are some prerequisites before you can install the later BIOS versions.

Thanks for replies.

Yeah I know the b450 support both hence getting the 1200 ha, I was just curious if they had put some stupid limitation on what processors can do it, but as far as updates go I’m fine and will be fine with whatever the M board has been shipped with, the itx build I’m doing for someone, so was debating whether to attempt any updates or not

Most of the MSI B450 have Flashback and the top Asus ROG motherboard has it as well. Other than that then you'll need a 1xxx/2xxx CPU to flash the bios for 3xxx CPU support. AMD apparently have a service (for a small fee) where they will ship a CPU to you should your motherboard need an update for Zen 2 and you don't have an older CPU.
