We bought a recliner sofa from Harveys which arrived on Wednesday, it has several issues, which myself and my partner talked over and we initially decided it was so bad and the cause of the issues looked to be a design fault, so we couldn't see a replacement being much better.
Then I woke up next day and decided I would give them another chance.
So i called them and they have placed an order for a completely new sofa

Bearing in mind I have never had a modular sofa before so don't know how much movement is normal.
We ordered a right and left module and a centre module all of which are power recliners and then we also have a media unit/tray, which is essentially a couple of cup holders and a tray with a lid for storage.

The issues

1 - the biggest issue, the left hand unit rocks quite badly when moving around in it. it will physically tip forward if you were to lean on the arm with no one in it. It also has a big gap between it and the module it is connected to. Delivery guys said they hadn't seen this issue before.

2 - the way that the units fasten together is just 2 metal pins that slot in to the frame of the unit next to them, they don't click in to place and this allows for quite a bit of movement between the units.
I can see holes in the frame that lineup and if I were to put a couple of bolts through the frame this would lock the units together and significantly cut down movement, however i can only do that with 1 module as the media tray which sits between 2 of the seat modules does not have a metal frame and as such i can only see that a couple of screws through the frame of the seat in to the wood of the media tray would achieve the same effect. I am loathe to do this to a brand new £1600 sofa however, and feel it very poor that I should have to do so.

3 - the foam on the end of both arms hasn't been shaped right at the end and one has a weird lump and the other a little dip.

Of course the one on the showroom did not exert any of these issues, but it was a corner group being displayed and we wondered if that added stability to the sofa.
So my partner called in to harveys on the way past and checked out the showroom sofa again just to check it against ours. they had it pushed up to the wall, so she pulled it away as best she could and said whilst there was a little movement it was nothing like ours.

Add to this I went online last night and had a look at Harveys reviews and it wasn't pretty, pages and pages of people warning not to buy from them, had i seen the reviews before purchase I am fairly sure we wouldn't have bought this sofa.

So what exactly is normal for a module sofa ?
I'm sure I have sat on a modular sofa somewhere before without realising it and not experienced anything like this.

Not sure if it was a Harveys but we had as you describe some years ago, exhibited the same issues where the units connected together one was solid, it was like there was no gap, but it was if you disconnected it. The other however lent slightly away from the unit it was connected to, it wobbled and annoyed me no end. It cost best part of £5k.

Never again would I buy from these large chains, well not at that sort of money. When we moved 3 years ago it didnt suit our house. We ended up with a £600 sofa from IKEA. Its still but if I was to need to rate them side by side I would rate the IKEA one more. The expensive one, cat was sick on it, couldnt remove the covers, getting cat sick out of the sticthing without damaging it was interesting. The Ikea one when cat was sick on it (shes ill so does this) was a simple unzip, turn inside out and wack it in the washer. Madness.

if the build quality is not really what you expected already, I'd be concerned about long term ownership (especially an electrical mechanism)
so, did you share all of your concerns with them ? I would still potentiallly reconsider choice to take a replacement, versus visiting shop face to face,
to express these (or a pretext) and cancel it.

... I'm more of a get a manual recliner, with money spent in the fabric/foam/carcass.

Have unfortunately bought twice from Harveys, both times having issues with quality.

When they let us down a second time we realised it couldn't be coincidence, and have never bought from them again.

Well we'll see how the 2nd sofa is when it arrives. If it's the same rubbish, we'll send them both back for a refund.
Just to clarify Harvey's haven't said we can't have a refund, it was our decision to let them order a replacement
