We bought a recliner sofa from Harveys which arrived on Wednesday, it has several issues, which myself and my partner talked over and we initially decided it was so bad and the cause of the issues looked to be a design fault, so we couldn't see a replacement being much better.
Then I woke up next day and decided I would give them another chance.
So i called them and they have placed an order for a completely new sofa
Bearing in mind I have never had a modular sofa before so don't know how much movement is normal.
We ordered a right and left module and a centre module all of which are power recliners and then we also have a media unit/tray, which is essentially a couple of cup holders and a tray with a lid for storage.
The issues
1 - the biggest issue, the left hand unit rocks quite badly when moving around in it. it will physically tip forward if you were to lean on the arm with no one in it. It also has a big gap between it and the module it is connected to. Delivery guys said they hadn't seen this issue before.
2 - the way that the units fasten together is just 2 metal pins that slot in to the frame of the unit next to them, they don't click in to place and this allows for quite a bit of movement between the units.
I can see holes in the frame that lineup and if I were to put a couple of bolts through the frame this would lock the units together and significantly cut down movement, however i can only do that with 1 module as the media tray which sits between 2 of the seat modules does not have a metal frame and as such i can only see that a couple of screws through the frame of the seat in to the wood of the media tray would achieve the same effect. I am loathe to do this to a brand new £1600 sofa however, and feel it very poor that I should have to do so.
3 - the foam on the end of both arms hasn't been shaped right at the end and one has a weird lump and the other a little dip.
Of course the one on the showroom did not exert any of these issues, but it was a corner group being displayed and we wondered if that added stability to the sofa.
So my partner called in to harveys on the way past and checked out the showroom sofa again just to check it against ours. they had it pushed up to the wall, so she pulled it away as best she could and said whilst there was a little movement it was nothing like ours.
Add to this I went online last night and had a look at Harveys reviews and it wasn't pretty, pages and pages of people warning not to buy from them, had i seen the reviews before purchase I am fairly sure we wouldn't have bought this sofa.
So what exactly is normal for a module sofa ?
I'm sure I have sat on a modular sofa somewhere before without realising it and not experienced anything like this.
