Apparently Mo Salah wearing a suicide vest and making some comments about praying at half time etc...

Now he's clearly a chav/nasty individual and has mocked someone simply because of their religion, I'd suspect that most people would like to see some retribution or punishment for this bloke here.

I do wonder though - if you agree with this guy being punished then would you also agree with say someone mocking a famous scientologist? Say posting a doctored image of Tom Cruise and some aliens or some other scientology trope? Perhaps something involving the whole film crew?

Don't get me wrong I think the guy in this case is a probably a nasty piece of work and probably a racist, on the other hand, as a liberal, I think we need strong protection of freedom of speech - he's not called for violence or issued any threats, he's not tweeted racial slurs/abuse towards the person in question, he's simply mocked someone's religion with a doctored image.

As a result of his actions he was nearly given a custodial sentence, seemingly he's avoided that by showing some contrition... we have people caught carrying knives who avoid prison time and people involved in actual assaults against others but someone was seriously at risk of a custodial sentence because they tweeted something offensive relating to a person's religion? That's very dubious IMO.

While I don't agree with what he did how is this getting the police out when being robbed and calling them makes them leave you waiting 6 hours or not showing up at all (not always but it has happened). It's like the Grenfell joke with the burning tower meme, makes me happy to run a VPN and not have any social media accounts, law in this country is stupid along with policing, we've got thieves stealing and not getting custodial sentences but someone makes a poor tasteless joke and he almost faces custodial sentencing?

I know what I'd rather have, I'd rather someone makes an offensive meme of me rather than rob me.

Expand on what point?

I asked a question and nothing more. Do you understand what racially aggravated means?

Yes - I also asked a question. I've asked a question in the OP too - are you just here to troll or would you like to attempt to discuss the topic in good faith?

It seems rather dubious to post a question for no reason and to ignore the questions posed towards you, the thread responder - why post at all if you're not interested in discussion or are seemingly unwilling to share a view? But again in answer to your question and related to this case: yes!

Where do you start.

Too many scum in the 70s, 80s & 90s, what does the gov do about it, crack down on free speech. New Labour. Some say they're just discipling people, teaching them some common values like common decency, others say they're being enslaved and losing their freedoms and liberties by an authoritarian government.

As long as you have cities it will never end.

Not sure why you’ve got your back up after one simple question.

You understand what racially aggravated means. Do you disagree with racially aggravated actions being dealt with by law?

Sorry but why ignore my questions and simultaneously expect me to answer yours? Anyway - to answer your second question - not necessarily but I disagree in this case as I don't think religion should be protected like this.

Can you answer the questions I've posed now please:

I do wonder though - if you agree with this guy being punished then would you also agree with say someone mocking a famous scientologist? Say posting a doctored image of Tom Cruise and some aliens or some other scientology trope? Perhaps something involving the whole film crew?

And while you're at it perhaps share a pov on the topic else it is rather pointless...

Your going round in circles though, not getting to the root of the issue, why are we able to mock Tom Cruise without repercussions and not minorities such as Muslims?

He should be given community service in a Muslim charity helping to feed the homeless.

No cost to the taxpayer and everyone would win.

Not sure how many people mock TC by slapping a suicide vest on him (ed: in an image)

I’m not ignoring your questions. I’m attempting to discuss the topic you’ve raised by first finding out where you stand as it’s unclear.

The guy was dealt with by law because his actions were racially aggravated. That’s against the law and he pled guilty. You either agree with that or you don’t.

I believe the law should stay out of matters involving offence. It’s hard to say what’s offensive and what isn’t.

It does read to me like something that escalated on ******* beyond the guy's control quicker than he could handle. Football in the city is the third religion and "banter" between Liverpool and Everton fans escalates all the time. Had it been just an argument in the pub I doubt the police would have been involved unless it went physical.

WHO he insulted would be an aggravating circumstance. There has been a marked decrease in Islamophobia in the city largely attributed to Mo Salah. See the economist (paywalled) or here which is largely the same article.

You just have - I've even repeated them for you and asked what your pov is.

I’m attempting to discuss the topic you’ve raised by first finding out where you stand as it’s unclear.

I gave my pov in the OP - if there is something you need to clarify then go ahead though it is rather disingenuous of you to demand further answers when refusing to do the same yourself.

Well I don't agree.

Are you going to provide any clarity here on your pov? Do you understand what racially aggravated means?

What the **** are you talking about?

The guy pled guilty for racially aggravated actions.

I think you've missed the point completely - this was about religion not race. It would perhaps help if you were willing to engage in discussion. Replying to the thread with terse questions and then quoting someone and saying "what the *** are you talking about" in response to their point isn't too constructive.

They made a mess of the ME that's why so many Muslims were blowing themselves up and the powers that be twist it to make the Muslims look like demons.

So it's all a big con, or at least it was in the days before the internet and all the leaks, not easy to do things behind closed doors anymore. Can't just start an illegal war, realise you made a huge mistake and try and cover it up.

Same happened in NI.
