AMD's Version of ShadowPlay

I don't have any experience with Relive and the latest AMD GPUs but it seemed to reduce capture quality on the fly to reduce the performance impact (kind of like MSI Afterburner capture does) in some situations (which is sometimes desirable but not always) while Shadowplay would hold quality but at the expense of approx. double the performance impact.

Can not say I have noticed a reduction in quality to what I set by the software. This video was one of the more recent videos testing out 7.1 audio recording by Relive.
It kept the target 35mbps and 1440P 60fps

Did you mean you 'can't notice a reduction in quality'?

I have noticed banding in some scenes in a video recorded using Nvidia Shadowplay (Share) in the game Control when in a dark area.

Not at computer right now to get the names but basically they is more reply options you can do with relive.
ah ok. i'll have to install it and have a play about. not that i have many kills/deaths or indeed any in game incidents worth keeping but it's sometimes nice to have for a laugh at a later date. initially streamed to be able to capture anything of note but that's a pain in the hoop too. having a key press record the last 'x' amount of seconds game play would be nice for all those pro/fail moments!

Yeah I did edit my post.
All my recording using Relive show really good quality and it's only using 35mbps.

This might help. It's a year and a half old but still the newest article on SP v Relive. Link to full article below.

The Bottom Line

This evaluation has been a very enlightening one. We have spent a good deal of time learning and using AMD ReLive and NVIDIA ShadowPlay in many games. While we used PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS for actual performance testing, we have also been using the software in multiple other games to get a feel for usability. We have a good grasp on how each one works, and what works best for recording and streaming gameplay.

In terms of performance, our data actually leaned toward NVIDIA ShadowPlay performing better in terms of framerate and CPU utilization. It had less burden when being enabled on the system. That said, there are surely some games where it will swing the other way. In the end the results are so close together you cannot tell either one apart from the other when it comes to the real world experience. The gameplay experience is still the same. Both are very efficient while gaming, and blow the doors off of software recording like FRAPS. Either one would be just as good for recording as far as performance goes.

What it all really boils down to is features and supported options. In that regard, AMD ReLive is way ahead of NVIDIA ShadowPlay. Actual usable, customizable features that content creators want in software AMD ReLive has and NVIDIA ShadowPlay is lacking. In terms of video quality support, audio quality support, overlays and streaming, AMD ReLive wins hands down. AMD has been able to provide more feature support in ReLive in two years than NVIDIA has done in five. Plus, no registration, no login. AMD ReLive is overall the better option for recording and streaming your gameplay, for enthusiasts, gamers and content creators. AMD ReLive is our preferred choice at the moment.

I would like to see Nvidia include an alternative to variable bit rate and, AFAIK, now that they've teamed up/working with OBS, it will be interesting to see what happens in that space.

as so it relies on the devs adding support for relive to do it as well as shadowplay?

not sure what you mean?

With Relieve you can go back the last 30 seconds to record kills etc, irrelevant if developers have coded such things.

Im sure i saw an Action Replay option in the ReLive settings last time i looked. You can change the window size and position it.

Yeah, they are actually two replay options within Relive, one that just simply an instant replay and a in-game replay that when you record you can see it right away while in game.

where the heck do you chaps see those things?!

edit: ignore, think i sussed it

Article states that AMD had far more features. Have they added more and have Nvidia also added more?

Performance is improved also since then for Relive. NV hadn't changed anything until July 2018 I know first hand from my 1080Ti.
Also consider with Shadowplay, you have to have installed the Nvidia Experience Spyware logger.

Yea under the ReLive option, all the tabs are in there somewhere.

I use OBS as i can still use the same AMD codec etc in OBS and i use OBS for streaming too so everything in one place for me.

Using AMD codec in OBS has the same small hit on the GPU as ReLive does so no performance is lost, not noticeable anyway.

I only use ReLive if i need to have no overlay stuff on the recording while streaming but when not streaming OBS does a great job anyway.

From doing a bit of research looks like it was an older version that used to - at the time max mbps was also lower than it is now.

Heres the Recording tab with the sliders maxed.
