So today was alongside someone driving on his mobile for a good 5 mins,as we stopped at a red light with him alongside us (I was not driving btw,i was passenger) managed to get a VERY clear photo of this guy on his phone, and of his registration plate,he was oblivious I was even taking a photo which showed he was not taking any notice of his surrounding's.

My question is,Is it even worth reporting this with the photos to my local police,Will they actually do anything or does it need to be a police officer actually catch them red handed.?

Just really annoys me,there's all sorts of tech now like hands free kits,No need to risk other people because you cant pull over for a few mins or get an inexpensive hands free kit!

I dunno about photos but dashcam footage can be sent to the police https://www.nextbase.com/en-gb/national-dash-cam-safety-portal/ I suspect your local force will accept photos though probably only anything will be done if several people have reported the driver and/or there is another incident involving them.

EDIT:

"Evidence will be accepted in the form of still photographs or video footage; however, the submission must fully show the incident. For example a still photograph in conjunction with your statement may be acceptable to prove an offence of using a mobile phone but video footage must be provided in relation to traffic light offences."

video will be the best thing to get a conviction. A photo leaves a lot of doubt as to whether the engine was running/car moving etc.

That's what I thought, maybe it won't be enough proof that he was actually driving and not stopped, obviously at the time I taken the photo he was stopped behind red lights same as us, however as lights turned green he just carried on oblivious.

Just LOL if you don't take pictures of hunky men when you're stuck in traffic dreaming about those strong thighs and defined abs, God I bet he works out probably every day, maybe even twice, what a beefy babe!

Noobs.

And it really annoys me that people think using a hands free kit is safer than just holding the phone, when it isn't as it's the concentrating on the conversation that is the distracting part not the holding of a phone.

So if you are upset because of the threat to others rather than someone just breaking the law you shouldn't be doing either.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phones_and_driving_safety

Driving while using a hands-free device is not safer than using a handheld phone to conduct calls, as concluded by case-crossover studies,[1][2] epidemiological,[3][4] simulation,[5] and meta-analysis.[6][7]

And before anyone says, no, talking to a passenger is not as distracting as talking on a phone.

The first result (the driver with no passenger or cellphone conversation) was the result with the least accidents. Adding a passenger into the car increased the accident rate slightly, but not by much. Making the driver talk on a cellphone increased the accident rate by three times.

Which is probably due to a combination of the passenger being aware of the situation and tailoring their conversation to the driving conditions and a lot of our communication is non-verbal so you have to concentrate more on a conversation where you get no visual clues from the other person.

So, on the basis of safety we should ban all phone use while driving, which I know of some large companies that have done this for all their reps/employees, but I don't think it would be a popular decision with the general public.

it drives me nuts when i see people on mobile phones it is proven you're attention is not on the road so you can kill other

IMO it should be a 6 month ban and a huge fine that will stop people

I love catching people when im a passenger.
Just pointing my phone at them as of taking a video and they often throw their phone on the floor and look all guilty. It's great fun.

My wife knows I refuse to answer the phone when I'm driving. But she still calls me repeatedly when she knows I'm driving (several calls in succession that get ignored). It cheeses me right off but it's just not worth the risk.

But as for reporting someone else I am afraid I am an old fart and from the school of not being a snitch.

Doesn't matter if they were stopped at a redlight or not. If your in the driving seat, you aren't allowed to touch a mobile phone at all.

You can even be done trying to pay using your mobile at a drive-thru.

I’ve captured dashcam footage recently of three drivers deliberately going through red lights because they got fed up with waiting. I was going to report one but it’s not just about uploading the evidence, you still need to provide a full statement to the police for a prosecution.

Maybe just move on with your life?
This TBH

Did he pose any threat to you? Did he cause any incident or harm to you or the surroundings? Was he driving dangerously as a direct result of him using the phone?

No? Well get over it and find something better to do with your time to be honest.

Nail his arse to the wall. If it were down to me it’d be an instant ban, no questions asked.

No phone call is so important that you can risk the lives of others.

Agree here. Especially with every new car having hands free there is no reason to be holding a phone.

My daughter did this, two photos, one of the guy with the phone and another that showed him and his number plate (she was a passenger)

She reported via a webpage and the police came back that they would be sending him a warning letter. So not enough to prosecute them but enough to put the frighteners on the guy.

The problem with attitudes like that is the reason why people flout the law regarding phone use in the first place.

And before anyone says, no, talking to a passenger is not as distracting as talking on a phone.

I'm still waiting for someone to post up some credible evidence to suggest why talking to a passenger is not as distracting as talking to someone through a hands-free kit.

It doesn't matter what medium is used, whether the person is adjacent to you in the car, or the other side of the world, the conversation will still be the same.

Look a bit awkward holding a passenger to your ear though.
