upgrade from 1080gtx to 2080super / 2080ti

thx for the replies all.

i mainly play MMORPG's if I'm honest which are often not the best optimised. I have started to notice my FPS is now average with 1440p.

Do we have any idea when the next line of GPU's will come?
I'm not sure if the 2070s would be enough of a gain to warrant the change?
In the past ive usually OC'd my GPU's mildly to get them to close in on the next model up, is this still a thing with say the 2070s or is it already at the max?

cheers all

I find CPU's to be more important with mmorgs. Most of them have very easy graphics but the moment you go in to a crowded area the CPU/Mobo/RAM falls apart so I think you would benefit some from upgrading your CPU. The only issue is whether you consider that gain to be worth the money. Many would not.

I always find a good solid CPU upgrade will last 5/6 years as opposed to a GPU upgrade which might only be 2/3 years. So whilst it might not be considered the most glamorous upgrade generally it is worth the money in the long run as the cost evens out over the longer period.

Using Ryzen as an example buying a 3900x should last 5/6 years and with Ryzen 4000 there should also be an upgrade path which can increase lifespan.

if you are going to get one then dont hang around - i was going to suggest a zotac extreme amp 2080 - just as quick as a 2080 super.

however the price on these cards now appears to be going up - its £30 more than when i bought it a few weeks ago.

I would get a 2080. The TI performance increase is not worth the extra cost.

i would agree with that - to me a good 2080 was worth the additional cost over a 2070 super especially at 4K. (extra £130) - to get a similar jump in speed again to a 2080TI then i would need to spend another £450 - the £130 was worth it the further £450 to next level not worth it

I will probably be on the look out for a good deal on either a 2070s or 2080 then. I'm in no immediate rush as my current card still works.

Ill have a look through some reviews and see if I can find some OC variations. Always a bit deceiving when you watch a review with a reference card vs an after market one.

I know your regret re the 1080Ti situation as I got my GTX 1080 for £440 in a 2017 black Friday FLASH sale and it's a great clocker but if I had the 1080Ti I'd be sitting pretty at 3400*1440 which the 1080 starts to unhinge when maxed out in settings.

I'd love a 2070S but trying to hold on is difficult as I'll then have a worthless GTX1080 where they still go for decent money on eBay. If you consider my cost of ownership for the card it would be about £150/year after selling it, not bad.

This is why I mentioned in another thread that I hope next gen consoles cannibalize GPU sales as this will lower the costs simply because more of them will be sitting on the shelves gathering dust.

If a lot of potential GPU customers forego buying a next gen GPU and instead by a console less demand will lower prices.

If prices for GPU's continue to increase more people will be priced out and instead look at alternatives such as consoles.

I don't believe consoles will ever have any impact on pc sales.

It's 2 completely different types of market.

The majority of people who game on PC can never put up with the pitfalls of a console and vice versa.

Yes some have both but only in niche circumstances like this forums users.

For example if consoles went up in price by £200 how many of them would switch to PC? I'm guessing none would.
