Something weird just happened outside my house and I'm wondering if any seasoned criminals or inter web detectives on here can help me understand.

Two chaps pulled up outside my house (quiet cul-de-sac) in an Audi saloon (A4 or A6) and got out. The passenger changed the plates from an MJ03 *** plate to a WF02 *** plate. This bit I understand - they were up to no good.

The driver went around each corner of the car with a roll of black duct tape and taped something in each wheel arch. What would he be doing?

I called it in and the police said the 02 plate was stolen off another car but they couldn't figure out why they were taping something in each wheel arch. So, criminals and detectives of OcUK, what were they up to?

I have it all on my potato CCTV, I'll see if I can upload it.

Hmm weird one, perhaps a weapon of some kind, or drugs, maybe they tape drugs to the outside and go park the car for someone to stop and collect from the arch so there no exchange in person. Could be anything really

Flash reflectors. Make it hard for vehicle to be tracked at night. Most cameras are on the number plate recog system across UK so by blinding the cameras plates can't be tracked.

Edit: I would just like to say I have and will never commit crimes via stolen vehicles in the UK.

I should clarify, it looked like he was taping something up inside the wheel arch, not on the exterior bodywork.

Edit: Actually having reviewed the footage, it looks like he is putting tape over the alloy wheels as well

The car is just a red herring then. The real goods were what got taped into the arches. The car is being moved/transported somewhere and having it taped into the arches would evade a casual inspection. My bet would be guns or munitions. You wouldnt move small amounts of drugs like this, but you could move a small number of pistols on a car ferry for example.

Unfortunately it's not the 1950s. Any reason to avoid inspection a simple tape and dash on side of the road won't do.

Most people don't even use body panels to hide anything these days because it's easily found. Even more daring attempts at a sealed container in the fuel tank don't pass everytime.

Rust then for a quick flip of a stolen/written vehicle my guess.

Most sensible people don't tape drugs to wheel arches for obvious reasons.

Just LOL if you're such a crim that you can't even hold back on offering advice on how things should be done.

Noobs.

Taping over rust to sell a car?! So instead of rust you see.... tape. Well that's a new one on me. Buried in a pile of underseal on a floor or inner wing, maybe - but not just gaffer taped over and left like that :p

I know it's absolutely fantastic was to pass mot. My personal favorite is cutting out rust and having a professional welder to make it as good or better then new.

I'm curious to see the video now :D

Could be they swapped the plates for nefarious acts and taped the rims so they dont stand out in the dark?

I did say casual inspection on a car ferry. Not an enforcement agency or army checkpoints.
Bob the ferry security guy who sticks his head in the window and may ask you to pop the trunk, but realy just cannot be arsed.

We are also discusing a pair of guys who did this in a public place on a housing estate. They are not going to be brain of britain iq levels.

Putting tape on rust and attempting to sell a car is quite common. I have no idea how succesfull they are. I gues it saves on spending hundreds of pounds to get the rust fixed.
