Main Dealer Credit Card Purchase

Has anyone had issues when trying to purchase a car from a main dealer when trying to use a credit card?

I've found a vehicle I like, I asked if they accepted American Express they said no (fine fair enough not everywhere does) so I've found another card provider with a decent deal so got a different card.

Had an exchange of emails with the dealer this morning and they stated the purchase must be Debit not Credit card. I've called up and it sounds like they do accept credit cards, however only a maximum of £1k.

I just find it a bit strange, is this likely to be because they're now no longer able to charge a fee when using credit cards so they're trying to minimise fees from the credit card provider?

Cheers,

I have never ever found a main dealer accept credit cards for a car purchase. Infact when we bought the Mini they wouldn't even take debit card. Infuriating.

What I do is pay the deposit on the credit card and the rest on the debit card. Covered for the full amount on the credit card that way.

When buying from a ford dealer last year, would only take debit card for deposit and rest had to be bank transfer.

Silly way of paying you have zero protection doing a bank transfer.
If they didn't at least allow debit card payment id walk out.

No idea what happens if you press the case but when I was looking around to buy a pickup and another vehicle recently pretty much everywhere it was a case of deposit on a debit card and then bank transfer (or just bank transfer) and no interest in processing it any other way.

Just bought a car from a main dealer and they'd take credit/debit up to £1k, cash up to £3k anything over was transfer only.

Debit, cash or bank transfer only has been my experience. Shame as I would've loved to have got tens of thousands of air miles, but fees will cut into their margins significantly. Imagine losing 3% every time someone paid with Amex?

Last couple of cars I've bought it has been only £1k with the balance on a debit card, although last time they did allow a little bit more on the credit card when it came to paying but only another £500 or £1000.

If you're going to go credit card route it would've been better getting a personal loan or a hire purchase agreement on good terms.

Really not quite sure why you went the cc route?

Air miles? Waiting another month before having to pay?
You know some people pay off the credit cards every month in full and don't use them as loans! (Do people still use credit cards as mini-loans? F that APR!)

Defiantly not my cup of tea I had one at 0% deal but there are so many catches like transfer balance within 60 days or only on some certain amounts. Ended up paying it off and getting rid of the little *******.

Really? I have a couple and they're all paid off every month on direct debit. The fact they're debited after pay day is perfect. There's no way I could pay for everything in cash or debit card!

Were all these credit card rejections for new cars, or aproved used at main dealers? I'm somewhat surprised to see it as I recently bought a approved used Mondeo from a Ford main dealer and had no problems paying using a combination of part-ex, debit, and credit card. With the bulk (just over £10,000) being on a credit card!

In truth I actually used a loan to cover the credit card payment, but I get 0.5% cash back on anything spent on my credit card card and paying for it that way essentially got me a free £50. I then paid the credit card off in full the following month with the money from the loan so it made perfect sense to me.

Yeah I had a Barclays one about 8 years ago and it was horrendous for me, I hated the fact I would always have to pick the amount to pay because the suggested amounts barely cover a lunch!?!

And then there's the fact I found they were deducting pennies here and there randomly I enquired about the strange amounts and they literally sent me a decent cheque and told me not to worry?

Straight cash dealership, hey? Ballers!
Dealers who don't take card for the full payment will take a bank transfer. It is more and more common now, especially when they want people to take out a PCP rather than buy a vehicle outright these days.
