I'm finalising a new build, around a ryzen 3700x: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/gaming-and-video-encoding-pc-around-1000-or-so.18866165/ and i've been looking at a bunch of cards - rx 580, rx 590 and vega 56. Then, last night, i noticed the gtx 1660.

So, my question is, for around £200, give or take £20 or so either way (for a new card, for 1080p gaming @60hz), which would be the best choice between the 580, 590 and 1660? I appreciate the vega 56 is a better card, but that's closer to £300 new.

ps, reason i say 60hz is because that's my current monitor/tv display setup, at least for now.

thanks ;)

From looking around https://www.overclockers.co.uk/zota...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-11e-zt.html is just over that price, If your price was £300 then you would have more choice. The GeForce GTX 1660 isn't quite as powerful as the Radeon RX 580 but it's a little less expensive. The again the GTX 1050 is very similar to the Strix 560, but it has a little more power. But good luck getting a 10 series and I don't think most people are looking into them anymore.

Best choice. That red dragon 590 has an abysmal cooler & Polaris is starting to get gimped from time to time with newer drivers due to AMD focusing on Navi and screwing it up for older cards in the process. I had every Polaris chip and loved them but I can't recommend them anymore outside of some great rare deals on 570s. At £200 the 1660 is simply better than a 590 unless it's like £180 with a proper cooler (but those are £220/£230 - meh).

Thanks - Yeah, i hadn't even considered nvidia until the last day or so (was looking at 580, 590 etc) until i read this: https://www.pcworld.com/article/3106426/the-best-graphics-cards-for-pc-gaming.html particularly this bit:

The GTX 1660 beats the snot out of the Radeon RX 580—our previous long-standing sweet spot recommendation—in performance, soaring well past 60 fps in the games in our testing suite. It’s faster than the similarly priced Radeon RX 590 in most scenarios, too. On top of the performance advantage, the GeForce GTX 1660 comes equipped with 6GB of RAM, runs cool, and is incredibly power-efficient compared to its Radeon rivals. Plus, modern GeForce GPUs now play nice with affordable FreeSync monitors as well as pricier G-Sync display option. The GTX 1660 is a no-brainer.

ps, only thing i'd need with that card is a dvi to display port adapter/dvi to display port cable for 1 monitor which only has dvi input (the gpu's hdmi connection will be to a second display - tv).

You can pick up a Vega 56 for your budget if you look around. I'd take that over a 1660 any day.

All the Vega's I have seen at this sort of a price are blower coolers.

If.you going to up your budget a little 1660ti or the new super card that's coming. If you fixed at 200 get the rx580/590.

My rx card plays ever game I play maxed at 60fps 1080

Rx 580 at £150-170 is fine but no way should the rx590 or the red dragon be recommended when the gtx1660 is a far better card for the same price. Overclock the 1660 and it's nigh on stock 1660ti performance for £200-£220 at 130w-140w.

It's amazing how people overlook the gtx 1660.

Depends on the games and how long you plan on keeping it

If it's just the games in your sig, a cheap RX 570 will perform fine and give the most value. If it's something you want for a few years that you plan on running new releases on, get a Vega 56. You can get blower ones for £200 or £237 for a strix if you shop around. It'll beat the 1660 ti and when undervolted you have a 2060 level of performance.

This ^^^

Plus more VRAM and I believe you can even put the V64 bios on for more performance, although not sure how much improvement there would be on a blower card as cooling is limited compared to a partner card.

Have you ever had a pc on a desk with a blower cooler?? Ever one on the floor is still loud at full load. you have the option the fix the fan to a lower rpm.. but then they throttle like mad

If.you can get a none blower then yes that the card to get.

I've not mate, I've never had a blower card, the only experience of one I have is the MSI Air Boost on my friends rig I helped build and gaming it was barely audible. It was infinitely quieter than my Palit Dual 1070ti when that was on stock cooling and when gaming, if using a headset you cant hear anything other than game audio. I was pretty surprised and impressed with it and that's before he undervolted it, which he tells me it's even quieter now. Agree though that if one comes with a proper cooler setup for similar money or within budget, that would be the one to get, but at the time when he bought his it was £200 delivered, which was a no brainer.

I have had a few AMD blower coolers and the noise out put is just silly. It's like have and hair dryer on when gaming. Unless you fix a fan speed to say 50% or lower but there there is no performance.

With an headset on if your the only person the the room all is good. But I had my mum complain on a night when I was gaming and she in a different room(that was with a r9 290x)

Is it possible that the Vega 56 has a much quieter blower?

I think it must do, I was honestly surprised how quiet the MSI air boost card was.

Was it under gaming load. With the fan unlocked.
Out of the box they cap the fan speed but like I said it will throttle the card

There will have been improvement over time but there still loud.
You should monitor the gpu clock and see if its hitting max boost all the time.

Get one. You can always add an nzxt g12 and a 120AIO cooler latter
