Off up there for a night out on Saturday, none of the group have been before.

We're booking BOHNS to eat, can anyone tell me what the decent bars are? We're all in our forties, but still down with the kids.

Rock City is definitely worth a look. If you want a good craft ale session, you've got Bunker Hill and the Crafty Crow.

There is also the Pit and the Pendulem which is cool horror theme bar.

Brewdog bar in Hockley and if you fancy doing something different, go and watch the Nottingham Panthers at the ice stadium. Face off is at 7. Can get tickets for about £15 on the door.

EDIT: How could I forget..... Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem is worth visiting. A pub built into the old castle. It's like drinking in a cave.

Pit and pendulum is a dump and bunkers is well passed its day imo. Brewdog is rip off.

Old trip to Jerusalem is a must (oldest pub in England) quite quirky and a nice pint. Cross the road to the canal house for more nice ale then a walk , to the the Herbert kilpin and the junkyard in hockley.

I'm gonna say I am in my 20's but I'm recommending places that I've seen a healthy mixture of people of all ages so you guys don't feel ancient! :p

As SPG said Ye old trip to jerusalem, either hope its sunny or quiet as it is very small inside its built in the cliffside under the castle.

Also second canalhouse, possibly my favourite pub/bar in the city, the booze selection is tremendous and the canal goes into the pub. Note however Canalhouse is always rammed and its on the outside of town centre.

Penny lane is a really cool bar, its funky has hockey tables, foosball tables and other arcade style machines as well as your normal seating. I've seen plenty of older groups/stags/hens in there too.

Pitcher and piano is in an old church which is pretty cool, its just a chain though so nothing special to say about.

Das kino, its got 3 pingpong tables dotted around. Booze is good but you will be occasionally struck by a stray ping pong ball

Alchemist, its a chain you've probably been to one before but its nice in there and they do an amazing old fashioned cocktail.

Bunk, there is 3 of these around the city, I'm not sure how many times I've been now but its been a lot! Its a cocktail and wings bar, before 10pm cocktails and wings are 2 4 1. Well worth a visit to one of them. All have cool interiors.

Boilermaker, its a speakeasy bar hidden out back of an old boiler shop. Its cool, not worth a whole night but if you guys are planning to visit quite a few places I'd consider throwing it in the mix.

Not so much a bar but theres a funky underground crazy golf at the cornerhouse called lost city, it has a bar down there too just thought I'd throw that out to you if wanted to do something other than drink.

Other than that I'd just say avoid any bars by the cornerhouse, they are all big chains like revs, loud, poorly furnished and there is so many better bars in town.

There is plenty more places to recommend but I've tried to be generic, if you let me know the kind of night you're after I can recommend more if needed :p

EDIT: Also I would recommend Annies Burger Shack over BOHNS, BOHNS is good but annies is better IMHO

Cheers all. I've heard Annie's is good as well, might do one one night then go for lunch at the other on Sunday.

Will definitely go to Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem in the afternoon.

Need to workout a little crawl now.

I'll also be popping into Paul Smith before I leave for a browse.

Granted, my friends and I like the more 'rustic' (read: 'special' places) but here is a list of places we've been and liked:

Town Centre:

The Roebuck - yes, it's a Spoons, but as they go, a pretty good one, with quite a nice outdoor area upstairs
The Bell Inn - old school boozer with a good atmosphere. Used to have a whelk man come round (apparently a bit of a Nottingham legend)
The Bank - good for pub lunch food and as a meeting point, less so in the evenings
Pit and Pendulum - rock/gothic theme, cool if you like that sort of thing

The Three Crowns
The Stage - has a nice basement area, and a cheesy disco on Saturday nights
The old Dog and Partridge - proper old school

Riverside:

Canalhouse - as recommended by others
The Newshouse - bit out-of-the-way, but a friendly old school two room pub with decent beer and friendly clientele

I found the Pitcher and Piano very pretentious and expensive, but it is a good place to mix with the 'beautiful people'

Yeah, It's The Trip, The Salutation, The Royal Children, The Bell for ye olde pubs. They are all OLD. The Ned Ludd's okay over that way too. The Dragon isn't a bad pub either.

Canalhouse will be fine during the day, but does get busy at night. It's a big bar though so does cope unless it's a particularly busy night.

Junkyard is the by far the best craft ale bar. I wouldn't bother with the Crafty Crow. Das Kino is alright if you want a modern bar with ping pong. The Kilpin is the best sports pub in town. Brew dog is ****. There's a few bars up by it though in Hockley, which is pretty much all pedestrianised and caters for the **** up. Revolution Bar etc and some more better independents.

The pitcher is probably the best pitcher & piano I've been in anywhere. But it is a pitcher and piano. The Keane's head is just around the corner from there which is a proper pub. All the castle rock pubs are good if you like proper pubs.

I'd start off with the old ones and work your way back towards Hockley. It's a small city center, everywhere is within 15 mins or so and there's plenty of black (green) cabs about.

Tbh, I don't drink in any of these places (sometimes the Keane's) but when people come to stay it's generally where I take them.

Annie's is decent, but make sure you book, get there on time and be prepared to be sat late.

and the canal goes into the pub.

I read that and thought, what the hell is he on about?

Well blow me down, but it does!

I need to get there.

Yes you do need to get there! Its definitely a one of its kind!

I can only imagine the amount of trollied fools though that have dropped phones and wallets etc in the canal.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the oldest pub in England is Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, St. Albans, Herts, 793 a.d., not that I’m unduly bothered which pub is the oldest, I’m not a beer drinker.

I went to Annies 2 weeks ago - wasn't impressed at all. Soggy bun and the burger tasted like it was boiled with mediocre topping flavour

Annie's is ok most of the time but the service can be pretty abysmal. Do pretty good breakfasts too.

Nottingham.
This weekend.

Why has no one mentioned the Goose fair yet? Annual event, 1st weekend of October.

Wretched hive of scum and villainy ...

.... does give me an excuse to work from home though as it screws up public transport in the area ...

A technicality based on the word pub i belive. Besides in the trip your treading on sacred ground as all the knights went their for a drink before riding off to prevent the influx of Islam back in the day for the crusades.

Your spoilt for choice really in Nottingham, if you can get tickets the Nottingham panthers play the arch rivals (scum that is) the sheffield steelers at the ice center on Saturday night. Always a good atmosphere and cheap 3 hrs for sport as it goes.

Hmm.......inneresting

Have to take issue with that because the Oldest pub in England is The George at Norton St Philip in God's own county, Somerset.
