Hi guy, the reason I ask is, I am with sky and when I was using the sky hub, I had nothing but trouble, so I spent £200-£300 buying my own stuff, BILLION router(compatible with sky and fibre), changing the phone master socket and getting some wifi unifi access points.

Since I have changed all the stuff, the net has been flawless. But now I have just found out that bt is upgrading us to fibre as they have been working today at the bottom of my driveway.

So what I want to know is,, If I upgrade the sky from broardband to fibre, will it just be a matter of flicking a switch at their end or will bt have to come into my house to install stuff?... If bt have to install stuff in my house, they change all my equipment for theirs and I am a tad concerned about that... Plus with being in a wheelchair with a stammer, people think I have a screw loose, so I try to say as little as poss.

So have any of you guys upgraded from adsl broadband to fibre and what was the process?

FTTP is indeed real fibre, its glass all the way in.
FTTC is fibre to the cabinate which could be 500m from your house and the last part is all done over your existing copper telephone lines.
Hence why one is vastly superior to the other.

Once the ONT mentioned above is installed, it should be a simple matter of switching off your router's modem function and plugging it into the ONT. Everything will work as before (except better).

Ah so that ONT box gets installed in my house and that says there always, nomatter what isp I am with, then use a network cable from the ONT box to the router?

Wonder If bt will install the ONT box anyhow, without asking sky to upgrade me to fibre?

You only get the ONT installed when an FTTP order is placed, unless it's a new build development.

Think of the ONT like your master phone socket in terms of the relationship that ISPs have with it.

VOIP can run over ADSL and FTTC though. There’s no need for FTTP.
Plus it's not just Openreach installing the fibre network, so many companies are taking part.

Glide are huge round here, we also have City Fibre deployed, Gigaclear in the smaller villages.

OPENREACH have no choice if they're planning to switch off POTS/ISDN in 2025 as all telco's will have to switch their users to VoIP.

Shawrey

Lots of people seem to have confused a POTS switch off with the removal of copper lines, when - as above - running your voice over ADSL/FTTC is one way of achieving this switch off target.

BT have thousands of people trialling voice delivered via their Home Hubs and DECT handsets currently.

I have just had a word with the bt engineer at the end of our driveway and it is FTTP that he is installing and looks like it will be done next week. I wonder if I can just cancel the broadband but keep the phone from my sky subscription, then I can have the fibre from bt straight away?

Why would you want to keep the copper line and take FTTP? Ask for your POTS telephone number to be transferred to BT VOIP.

phil my man long time no speak, nando says hi.

my area has been done over by city fiber and vodafone so its 900/900 meg ready but they are having issues with the fiber so it was a good choice i decided to renew with virgin. dont be hasty to jump onto a new service, let others be the beta testers, there will be issues with fttp to begin with but in a years time all should be good.
