Hey guys. I really should have looked into this sooner but our renewal has come through and that are looking for roughly £35 a month! We have been at the house from new and never shopped around but now I feel I can do much better.

After a very quick comparison site search, I'm getting quotes as low as £10 a month. So as I haven't looked into this before, I just want to make sure I'm not missing any thing or under quoting myself on buildings value and contents value etc

It's a 3 bed, very standard stuff. What do you guys pay in similar situations?

It estimates my buildings cost should be set around £160,000 as a rebuild cost. And contents based on people in my area of a similar age is roughly £20k (<I'll give this figure more attention later).

My current insurer is trying to renew buildings at £400k and contents at 50k. I did ring them today and they claimed. They offer 2 brackets, upto 400k, and upto 600k. So sounds a bit overkill.

Just want to get an idea of what to expect and not to under sell myself on the quote. Do people tend to go for accidental cover? I'm inclined to say no to that

3 bed semi (circa 120k)
500k rebuild cost (automatic figure)
200k contents
£96 for the year - quotemehappy,com

Sounds like my renewal and probably past few years have been way over priced then :/

I'll just have a look through and pick one I recognise, check level of cover etc and go for that

My house is covered for up to £750K i think. It's also covered for contents of like £60-£80K. Costs like £150 a year. It's usually a bracket so I can't go from £750K to a lower one.

3bed EOT
180k rebuild
35k contents
Billings and contents with accidental cover
1 specified bike at 850
Maybe 100 quid excess, can't remember
116 quid for the year.

Would not pay 35 quid a month, wow

I think mine went up a few quid on the last renewal so I just left it rather than faff around to change it. Although with that being said it pays to know what extras you get as well. I was with Admiral and for the first year that came with free emergency cover (would have been an extra £10 a year to pay for it) at the time I did not even think about it but when one of the flexi hoses on the bath split and hot water was gushing everywhere I was able to get an emergency plumber our at no cost to me and he fixed the leak with no cost to me and no insurance claim either (the damage was less that the excess on the policy) so I almost always try and get this included now for the sake of an extra tenner (if you switch to a new provider it sometimes comes free for the first 12 months) Mine is around £12 a month for the same as above. What make my mind boggle is I know people that pay more to insure a boiler than I do to insure my whole house and contents.

Paying around £115 a year I think, but I get home emergency and some legal cover in that too.

Standard 3 bed detached more or less.

You get these things cheaper if you pay in one go upfront instead of monthly btw. Same for car insurance and car tax.

Direct Line renewal came through last week for me, £440. No thanks, looks like I'm switching to Admiral for their Platinum cover for much less.

Think ours is closer to £45 a month, mainly due to some fairly highly valued items being declared including a watch outside the house which alone seems to add about £80pa.

We also have the emergency home cover included and had a claim on a picture around 8 months ago which knocked it up a bit.

I don't have accidental but that can be pricey sometimes depending on who you go with. Also how many years no claim and whether you have had any claims can effect prices too.

:)

Same here.. switched to Admiral from DL for the very same reason.

DL have a habit of trying to sleep walk you into hiked up renewals so always best to shop around.

Any insurance company is only as good as they day they have to cough up.

I have accidental and Liability - covers me for my bike which I have used..:o

Go to a local insurance broker on the high street, admin fees for personal lines are normally £10-15 and they'll make sure you're fully covered.

My wife does it for a living, you've got to go over everything, even down to lock types on windows etc as they'll often use it as a get-out in case of a claim. It's not all about what you're paying :)

I don’t really understand why so many people pay monthly for home insurance when it’s only £100-£150 for a normal house. You end up paying 20% more for the same cover.

Don’t tend to bother with accidental damage but I don’t have any kids. Most breakables are not worth claiming for.

I do have additional named items covered including outside the home though, including jewellery, bikes and personal possessions like phones. It’s pretty rare I’ve paid more than £130 after cash back.

Just got my renewal through from DL, £30 price creep but I shop around every year. Again I just understand normal people who don’t spend a few mins on a comparison site to even sense check the price. Same goes for phones, energy etc.
