Why does every phone other than the iPhone come with android?

Just because there's more competition, it doesn't automatically make it better.
You know how much work needs to go into just creating a new OS for mobiles? Even if they do create one, and make it really good, how many smartphone manufacturers will take it? We know Apple will stick with iOS obviously, but how many android manufacturers are going to change from android to this? And then get it all optimised perfectly for use? It could take several years and I dont think anyone wants to faff around for that long and have nothing in the process.

I think the android market has too many different brands which is the problem, some of the weaker performing companies just need to call it a day and give it a rest. Companies like Motorola and Sony should focus on their other products and forget the mobile market. 5-6 different phone manufacturers is plenty

Competing is hard. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t.

Not saying you shouldn't, but the market is literally at the point where the choices are pretty clear. Not even sure what a new OS can provide that the other phones dont do already that would want to make them switch over

Maybe some sort of cohesive system of devices that have some interesting and innovative integrations with each other to unlock new and better ways of working.

Google have made such a hash of tablets and smart watches that it can’t be that difficult to do much better.

People have preferences and those preferences can be nuanced. What does a Vauxhall do that a Ford doesn't? Does Cathedral Cheddar taste any better than the ten other Cheddars on the shelf in Tesco? Why have dozens of brands of cola when they all taste pretty much like cola? This blue T-shirt or that blue T-shirt?

It's the same with a mobile OS. There's generally a 'best way' of doing most things, which is why iOS and Android are fairly similar. YET, some people despise iOS and other people despise Android - in spite of these two operating systems really being quite similar in many ways. So it's not about getting a third or fourth choice that is significantly better or different than what's already out there. It's about having additional ways to do the same things. And, like seemingly everything else, more things to argue over.

I guess so yeah, as far as im aware haven't google already ditched their tablets?

Fair point, its not that I dont want to see another OS, its just that I believe in this current market its going to be near impossible to do so, unless a well known company decides to come into the market (like how windows tried and failed)

Is a Linux mobile OS a possibility? That I would like to see

I loved windows phone live tiles (but I hated the way folders looked/worked). I also really liked the transitions between windows/apps.

There seems to be this mantra among some people that because they themselves can’t imagine anything different or already have all of their needs met that there should be no competition and things should remain exactly as they are. Your post makes the excellent point that we should not accept monopoly markets.

We need to level the playing field so that competition can exist.

This is the problem with forums these days, people try to shut down discussions they don’t like by being derisive.
But it's just round in circles. A number of posters have already explained basically how the world works yet you keep coming back with this odd sense of entitlement that everything should change because you don't like Google.

No, they’ve given their opinion of how the world works. I can understand where mrochester is coming from. Lots of people aren’t even trying to understand.

You explain it then because I'm not getting it.
It's OK for Apple to have iOS but it's not OK for Google to have Android.
So basically only Google phones can have Android on them but he expects all the other phone companies to come up with their own alternatives!
Now the problem here is if it was regulated then bye bye every other phone company except Apple and Google.

Why would it be bye bye every other phone company? Many millions would continue to buy Samsung phones if they had a different OS.

You are right you seem to have a distinct lack of understanding of the dynamics at play here. You seem to be confused thinking that iOS is operating in the same market as android (note, iOS does not compete in the smartphone operating system market. The operating system market would be android, windows phone, Symbian, i.e., products you would buy or license from someone else. Apple does not sell or license iOS to anyone else therefore the product is not considered part of the operating system market).

The easiest way to see which markets are or are not competitive is to consider what options there are.

Imagine you are Samsung and you are trying to decide what operating system to put on your new device. How many choices do you have? One (Android) or at best, two (Android or tizen). This is a very anti-competitive market.

Now consider you are an end user looking at what smartphone to buy. How many choices from different manufacturers do you have? Hundreds, if not thousands, of which Apple is but one. This is a highly competitive market.

As you can see there is no need to regulate Apple because their business practices are self-regulating (I.e., other companies can compete on the same terms as Apple can; if other companies fail it just means they haven’t made a good enough product that enough people want to pay for at a price that is sustainable for the business).

I’m used to dealing with narrow-minded people.

My objection with their narrow-mindedness is that it simply reinforces the status quo.

Imagine you are Samsung and you want to put iOS on your device - oh you can't.
Exactly. If Google wanted to they could say only we can use android. Over night almost every phone manufacturer dies.

Look at haiwei and the issue they have with Jo access to Google apps. Sales dived to the floor.

Google says only us can use android won't result in competition, it'll kill competition as HTC, LG, Sony, one plus, all die.

This is the exact opposite of having choice. Android/Google gives more companies more choice.

Because companies all make the same choice doesn't mean it's anti competitive.

This is so simple to understand.

If Google stop letting android be used by others, this kills competitors. Do you get that?
