Hi guys,

I've been looking into which graphics card I should upgrade my 980 TI with, but I'm a little stuck for which would be the better upgrade between the Nvidia 2070 super or Radeon RX 5700 XT?

My monitor doesn't have free-sync or G-sync and I tend to game at 4k, I've dropped my PC spec's below;

CPU - Intel kaby lake - 7600k 3.8Ghz
RAM - Corsair LPX 16GB 2400mhz
Mobo - Asus Prime pro
GPU - Nvidia 980ti MSI gaming X
HHD - M.2 Samsung 970 evo
Monitor - Asus 4k 60hz monitor

2070$ is the better card, but I would get a 5700 XT and save the money and upgrade earlier than spend more on the 2070$. The 5700 XT offers better bang for your buck.

Both cards will struggle to hit 60fps in next years games. I would hang on and get a 3070 next year, in fact that is what I am doing.

2070S is roughly 10% faster, but £100 more, 5700 is a match for 2060 SUPER, 5700 XT basically sits between the two or a touch faster than a regular 2070.

the 980ti is still a good card, as above have said, id probably wait till next year, i believe games like cyberpunk is going to be a system crusher. it will also be interesting to see what/if any improvements nvidia make with Ray tracing.

Mine (980Ti) is still going on a 1440p/144hz/gsync screen. I have been tempted to get a 2080S but you might be wise to hold out. I'm doing my best to do just that :D

Would you benefit more from overclocking your Kaby? The 980 Ti is not slouch, and if you're gaming at 4K then you could probably just turn anti aliasing off completely and get a chunk of frames back.

To answer your question though, there is a crossover point with the 5700 XT and 2070S which is worth considering: a heavily engineered, custom PCB and custom cooler 5700 XT (e.g. Red Devil) for £440, or a bargain basement stock PCB with cheapy cooler 2070S (e.g. KFA2) for £485? Otherwise it's 5700 XT every time for me. I personally don't think 5-10% performance boost is worth £100+ for the 2070S.

Still hanging onto my 1070 for now unless forced to upgrade - it still plays everything I play at 1440p w/ G-Sync with accpetable framerates - holding my money for the next generation cards.

Same here. Only reason I'm looking is because...well, new stuffs. I can't fault my 980Ti, it's an absolute workhorse.

980Ti and 1070 owners have no sensible upgrade options atm, what's on offer is either too slow or too expensive to justify. The 2080Ti is basically what u want for 4k but not at the current inflated prices. The 5700 XT is the better short term solution if you need a solution today.

Yeah exactly, i have a Vega56 and its fine, still doesnt stop me from looking at other cards.

Me too, and with 1440p ultrawide.

Pretty good buy, all things considered.

I was in the same position, got the 5700 XT Nitro and I'm very happy. Glad I didn't give my money to those greedy ****

Well you gave your money to the other group of greedy ****** instead. ;)

But in this day and age you don't have much choice if you want a halfway decent midrange card for more than midrange money.

I'm not sure you're going to notice much improvement with the 5700 XT: it's ~25% faster than the 980 Ti and that's on the edge of noticeability. The 2070S is ~35% faster which should be noticeable, especially at 4K. Go for the 2080S or 2080 Ti for a clearly noticeable speed boost.

What sort of FPS are you getting at 1440p as alternative option would be to buy another monitor which would be shame as 4k is mind blowing but I've moved from a 900p 75hz monitor to a 4K 60Hz about a year ago and I do occasionally miss the extra frame rate?

Unfortunately not, back when I built this system I made the decision to not overclock and bought the K version I5 as it had a higher stock core output of 3.8Ghz than the non overclocked version. I then bought a H chipset mobo that only has basic ram overclocking, they were cheaper than z boards but you got all the fancy extras. It was a good decision at the time but I wasn't running at 4k either, I have however Overclocked my 980ti is over clocked as follows;

GPU - +80mhz
Ram - +305mhz Ram
power limit - 109%
Down throttle priority set to temp at 92c

Gives any where from 5 on average or up to 10 frames extra depending on the game at 4K

The 5700xt is more like 45% faster than the 980ti and that would put the 2070s at 55%. Both would be a decent upgrade. This is stock v stock. The 980ti is better at overclocking than either so would gain some back in an oc v oc.

The 980ti is on some of these games. It's way slower. The 980ti is really showing it's age in some of the games tested. I think in bf5 the 980ti is really the standard 980 but the 1070 is there for comparison.

Edit: Actually looking through the list of games i think i under sold the newer cards. They absolutely stomp the gtx980ti.

Just going back on what I sad about over clocking CPu on H270 Mobo Asus Prime pro, it looks like I have the options to change the voltage in the Bios?:confused:

If I'm honest I was expecting the same sort of OC on the newer cards is this not the case?

Most newer cards are way closer to there limit. Any how check that Guru review and go through the games. The gtx980ti is a lot slower than i thought it would be. If it's not in the list now and then use the 1070 as a reference point. The gtx1070 is around 10% faster than the 980ti though but gets you in the ball park.

For Destiny 2 I'm getting 70+ but its not the frame rate that keeps me using the card. It's the fact it still works and gsync is a godsend. There is no way I'd ever go back to a 60hz monitor now...ever. Not even 4k would sway me. I've used my brothers and it's not bad, but the input lag is shocking.
