So I have an MSI gaming laptop. It only has a 3.5mm input and 3.5mm headphone jack which obviously only supports stereo. The devices show an SPDIF digital output, but there isn't a connection or jack on the laptop for it. I assumed that there was one built into either the headphone or line-in jack by using a TOSlink adapter but it always shows as disconnected when plugged in and theres no way to force the output to work.
Giving up on that method I bought a 5.1 usb sound card to use and have finally got the optical out working and connected to my surround sound system. The 5.1 test in windows tests all channels working fine at 48khz with dolby and DTS and I can watch DVDs in full 5.1 surround sound! hurray!
The major problem I have now is that all of my games play in stereo and I have no idea how to force surround sound, I changed the normal (non digital) speaker setup to 5.1 but as I am not using analogue they don't seem to do anything to the digital output. Is there something I'm missing?
For example, I don't want to buy a different/better soundcard but have the exact same problem
