Hi all

I hope you can help me as I think I’m about to throw this pc through the window soon!

New PC, specs below built over weekend all gone ok - was playing games this evening when it crashed and turned off. Since PC won’t turn on.

By not turn on I mean: Fans and motherboard logo lights up, and seems to be working, power to GPU visible from leds - no output to monitor (proved working) no windows splash screen or bios.

Attempts to fix (reboots after each of the below)
  • Different GPU used (working in other build)
  • All ram removed
  • 1 ram stick removed
  • GPU removed (remote connection attempted)
  • C drive removed
  • All drives removed
  • Motherboard battery removed and replaced after 5 mins
I can’t think what else to do, any suggestions?

As someone who is also having "new build" issues I truly feel for you.

Hopefully someone with far more expertise than myself will be along shortly with some great suggestions. It looks like you have done a lot, but I have noticed that sometimes I miss the simplest things so I thought I would make three suggestions:

(1) check and double check your cables. Since it sounds like your computer was working and now isn't, it wouldn't hurt to carefully go over your cables and make sure one didn't pop out and you just haven't noticed it. This is something that I have had happen (I assume it partially unplugged when I was transferring the tower to my desk and then just spontaneously popped out the rest of the way one day while I was using the system).
(2) How were your temperatures when you were using it? I wouldn't think this would stop it from rebooting once it cooled, but it doesn't hurt to verify.
(3) Don't throw the system through the window.....a door is far less mess....j/k. In general I find figuring out which part of a system is causing issues to be tedious and often very aggravating. For instance, you checked your GPU, but did you try it in the lower slot to see if there is an issue with the slot? What about the PSU...do you have a spare one to see if the new one is faulty and not delivering enough power? You tried with only one RAM stick, but did you alternate which RAM you tried (just in case the one you tried is defective?)

If it's any consolation, you are very likely to get yours running before I get mine! :)

At this point I would build the system outside of the case to troubleshoot it. Tried a different monitor? Prob something silly like a loose connection. Hope you sort it. Tried ram in different slots? Graphics card in 2nd pcie lane just incase there an issue with the other pcie 1st lane. Could be a number of things. Is the cpu installed correctly? Any bent pins on the socket? Is the cooler connected correct. Rebuild the system mate but check the pins.

Yes, don't discount the possibility of a power cable not having been firmly seated and come loose. Check both ends! Have you tried another video cable? Fortunately you have another PC so you can swap parts around. Taking the motherboard out of the case is a good idea - an insect may have crawled inside and died.

As above, Check all cables and components are seated correctly... Could it be a dodgy cable connection from GPU to Monitor?

Discounting cables, if you’ve tested with a different known to be working gpu then your possibly looking at dead cpu or partially dead motherboard. Did you have any overclock running that may have fried to cpu? Checked the cpu and socket for any sign of ‘nastiness’

Things to try, do these in order and attempt to start the computer after ever stage.

1) Unplug any unnecessary USB connections, only have mouse and keyboard connected. I would test the mouse and keyboard on another computer just in case it's those.

2) I would try with the pump on the water cooling unplugged, just in case the pump motor has gone and it's tripping the PSU. Maybe worth unplugged fan headers, again just in case a fan motor has failed and it's tripping the board.

3) Try the graphics card in a different PCI-E slot in-case the primary PCI-E slot/lane is faulty.

4) Unplug any HDD/SSD/CD Rom drives (unplug both power and data cables)

5) Re-seat the motherboards power connectors, if you have electronic contact cleaner something like Servisol Aero Klene 50, (don't use WD40!) you could also spray the plugs, but be careful not to get excess over the motherboard.

6) Try with one memory stick only in slot 1. Ideally you want to make sure there is no dirt / grease on the gold contacts, so you need to clean that stick with electrical contact cleaner (again Servisol Aero Klene 50). Try at least 2 of your memory DIMM's like this just in case the one your testing is faulty. You be very surprised at computers I find that won't post due to dirt on the memory gold contacts.

7) Try another known working PSU.

If you have got this far, then it's either a motherboard or CPU issue. I would then remove CPU and look if any of the CPU contacts look burnt - again you could have had a bit of dirt that dropped in the CPU socket, then over time with heat it's carbonated up. Don't remove motherboard until you have done all the steps above, while the motherboard is fitted it's in it's safest grounded position.

Thanks all for the responses.
I tried the following yesterday to no avail
I disconnected all the cables and reconnected. Tried each of the two sticks independently
Reseated CPU and checked puns
Stripped, cleaned and built outside pc

all of the above did not work, so I contacted Overclockers and have agreed an RMA of motherboard and cpu so will see what happens over the next week or so.

**Update**

response from Overclockers RMA is that the cpu and motherboard have been thoroughly tested and no fault found. Don’t really understand how so the items are on the way back to me and I will try again tonight.

When I spoke to OCuk though and they advised if it doesn’t boot tonight they will look at the PSU and Ram.

I know this sounds obvious but double if not triple check all connection at both ends of the power cables etc you never know :)

Tested returned unit today and all working when built on top of motherboard box.
Will fully build later in the week, I ran out of thermal paste after rebuilding twice and ordered some from ocuk but it wasn’t delivered :(

Yeah do all the tests and install all the monitoring apps, make sure all is running as it should

PC was built
Today and all working as expected. Stress test has been running for three hours so far without issue, and will keep running until tomorrow evening (24hrs).
