So my daughter has an Alexa in her room, so I wondered if I could put some RGB lighting strip behind her bed, bedside cabinet and dresser etc, to allow her to easily turn on/off for some mood lighting, and even do some jazzy stuff to music?

The one I've looked at so far is from Govee, with the caveat being you seemingly unfortunately cannot switch on its music mode (where the lights react to music/sound) via Alex voice commands.

Given how well that goes, I may then put some behind our TV and units in our lounge etc (again controlled by Alexa)...

Anyone had any experience with a brand that they can comment on and recommend?

ps: Obviously LifX seems to be epic in that it can even adjust colours along a single strip, but it's very very expensive!

Not much help as I've only used LIFX (with pretty results! :D) but I did see them go on BOGOF over the summer. With Black Friday/Christmas on the horizon it might be worth holding out for a few weeks?

In the time that passed since my post I bought some Govee Dreamcolor lights.

Pros:-
  • Nice app.
  • Alexa (Google) compatible for on/off, brightness and colour selection.
  • Nice and bright
  • Good music modes (mic built into hardware)
  • Nice DIY modes
  • Nice controller built into device (which is stuck neatly on wall next to units to control them).

Cons:-
  • Shame you can't turn on or control the music modes, DIY modes and "scenes" via Alexa.

The Govee lights looks ideal for a project Ive got coming up. Do you need any sort of hub to link them to Alexa?

Edit - it looks like there are different variants of the product. I was looking at one that doesnt appear to be controlable by Alexa but others do.

No, nothing else required. Direct connection (via 2.4ghz) network and usual skill etc.

Also, the included little button set is very useful if you can mount it in logical/useful place, just to turn the lights quickly/easily on/off.
