I should know better...GTX 1080 upgrade advice

Need gsync and prefer nvidias approach to drivers.

There are only two Turing cards that I would consider upgrading to at this stage, the 2080Ti or the 2070Super. If neither of those are appealing to you, then wait until the next gen appears.

If you really have an upgrade itch, get the 2070Super now. It's a great card and will notice a big difference between it and your 1080. I switched from a 1080ti to a 2070s and am very happy with the change.

I'm in a similar situation, and was almost going to buy a 2070s a week or two ago but figured the performance increase from a 1080 to the 2070s at 4k didn't look that huge from the benchmarks. Think I'll just wait it out for Ampere unless there's an amazing Black Friday deal or something beforehand.

Interesting thought they were equal in performance?

Though some older titles prefer the 1080Ti and some generally newer titles like the 2070S

How much of a fps boost have you seen?

The 2070S is getting better with each driver update and getting the extra features that won't come to the earlier cards, like Integer scaling. The change also allowed me to try out Ray Tracing and DLSS without spending too much. But where I really noticed the biggest change was in VR. I can run at higher settings with more supersampling and still get better performance than on the 1080Ti.

I was also considering second hand prices when I made the change. The 1080Ti is just decreasing in price in the second hand market, so I decided to sell while the prices were still decent.

The next generation cards might not come for 6 months or more.

Interesting that drivers giving you good perf benefits.
It seems unlikely they'd release the super series three months ago and replace them in just three months time?

I see them getting 9 months out of them before replacing them.
The 2070s certainly is a good stopgap card.

Screw it, I've got an EVGA RTX 2080Ti Black coming from eBay. Box opened but GPU never used, £750 couldn't say no to that.

Now just need to order the waterblock:p

I'm in the same position as OP, but maybe a bit better in terms of upgrade justification. My card is a 980Ti, and it is struggling with the likes of STALKER ANOMALY or a VERY heavily modified Skyrim (LOTD modlist) at 3440x1440. I have GSync and so am committed to team green but adaptive sync means I can (personally, not technically, so don't bash me) tolerate lower FPS rather than having 60+ all the time. I would like to maintain a more stable FPS with these demands, and having had my 980Ti for 3-4 years, it's probably a good time to update.

There's always two sides to this; you get some saying "wait, x and y are due out in z weeks". This is always the case. Is the 30xx series really going to be that good that it would be silly to sell my 980Ti and get a 2070Super now on BF?

Depending on if you want the game or not 2070 Super was a lot nicer an option prior to the 18th Nov when the Modern Warfare freebie deal was still going. Definitely dropped some lustre if you wanted that deal. Was a big factor in me buying mine, though maybe won't be as big an issue for many.

If I could sell the game and redeem its value it would have been tempting, but I've no interest in online FPS anymore. I'm really boring and pretty much exclusively play Skyrim, STALKER, and Mass Effect.

I'm finding it quite difficult to confidently pin down the expected performance gain I'd get from a 2070S over my 980Ti. Assuming I could sell the 980Ti for £100, I'd still be paying £400, so I'd want at least 50% improvement in fps. One concern is VRAM; it's only a 2GB increase, so not sure how much benefit it'd yield.

but they are the same in performance ....

It wasn't a decision based purely on performance.

I got a good price for my 1080Ti. I don't think I would get that much again as the closer it gets to the release of the next round of cards the less people are willing to pay for the older cards.

The EVGA card that I bought was on sale for a good price.

Wanted to try out Ray Tracing and some of the other features that Turing has that the older cards don't, without spending a lot of money.

I briefly considered buying the 2080 or the 2080 super, but they really aren't worth it over the 2070S. There are only two options in the Turing Lineup worth considering the 2080Ti and the 2070S.

The 2070S is the better card for VR. And that's important for me.

For me the 2070S has been a much better card than the 1080Ti.

Well I got done lads. Seller has refunded me so all is good but I got sent an rtx 2080ti hsf with no PCB.

Weird thing is I think it's a genuine mistake.

Now I am deflated and upgrade agnostic. I was thinking of upgrading to a 2070S so could move to next gen for little outlay each time.
I.e sell the 1080 while still worth decent cash on eBay.

That got me thinking why am I doing this and fretting so much over what is a hobby?

I now think ultimately I'll feel more settled in seeing how the 3000 series develop and spend on the high end soon after launch.

Looking for the home run from Ampere, higher clocks, more rasterisation much better RT performance.
