Civic Type R FK2 A Good Daily?

My other half has had an FK2 as her daily for about a year and she's loving it. The looks aren't entirely to my liking but that's all personal opinion.

It's an absolute hoot to drive, the throttle response is excellent and it accelerates really well even when it's not in R mode. Stick it in R mode and you can feel the difference both in engine and suspension. It's got one of the best manual gearboxes I've used. The shift is smooth and very positive. I'm a huge fan of the gearbox.

The interior is OK, it won't win any awards but it's a nice enough place to be. I do think the auto stop/start disable button was forgotten about when they designed the interior and they realised late and just shoved in any old button from the Honda parts bin. Seats are comfortable (we've done a few 5 hours journeys in it and didn't have any back grumbles) but getting in and our can be a bit awkward. Steering is nicely weighted but I don't care much for the wheel, the leather is quite shiny.

The entertainment system is quite poor in my opinion, it's a very clunky Android system which is one of the least user friendly systems I've used. Personally if it were my car I'd swap out the head unit for something much, much better.

I get annoyed with the collision detection system, it's far too overly sensitive and will often warn of impending doom and carnage unecessarily.

Talking about civics increases forum membership by 5000% apparently. On the subject, I think you should go for it OP. I had an FN2 and if I was in the position like you are to upgrade to the FK2 I would have done in a heartbeat.

I have been looking at the FK2 being a honda fan boy it makes sense as the next daily.

do some research as there seems to be quite a few examples with gearbox problems, You have to remember this car was basically just a "test" for the later FK8

Thank you for the input everyone, much appreciated. I had a good look at one of these again and have decided to hold off for now. I think I might be better off with a automatic car, I am just to lazy to change gears in a daily driver now and would likely get bored lol. I am going to replace my second car first and then come back to replacing my daily after.

Thanks everyone

I use mine for a 50 mile daily commute, I get about 290 miles out the tank. It's not designed for comfort, low noise or anything like that so not really an ideal commuter car. It's good fun though, but I'll be changing to something that can push 60+ mpg in the summer.
I'll miss the speed but not much else, and it will take Honda to make something really special to ever get me back in a Type R.

Sometimes it wont go into first gear, so I have do depress the clutch twice to get it in and sometimes 4th doesn't go in easily.

So, an update to this thread. I came back round to the idea of upgrading my daily a couple of days ago. The FK2 Type R was still at the top of my list, I have test driven one of these twice, and viewed them more than once over the last few years. I went out over the weekend with the intention of viewing popular hot hatches to see if any took my fancy. I could not find any FK2's near by, so I started the day viewing an A45 AMG in Green with the aero pack. What a lovely car, a real contender, really really nice bit of kit. I then viewed an Audi S3 which was a huge dissapointment, the interior was so poor, and the exterior styling was to plain for me, especially after seeing the AMG. I then viewed an RS3, which had a much better interior, but was not worth £50k to me. I then went to view a Golf R, The Golf R was very nice, certainly better than the S3, but the AMG was still on top for me. As I left the Volkswagen garage I trawled Autotrader for an FK2 in close-ish proximity, I found one 45 minutes away, so I thought I would go check it out and see how I felt, It was in blue which I had never seen for the FK2 before.

When I got there, wow, it just blew me away. It was perfect for me, I loved the styling, the fact it is a civic, the way it drives and handles, the japanese styling, and the interior is fantastic! I negotiated and we managed to strike a deal! Super pleased and can not wait to collect in the coming week! Pictures below :)

Vey nice, I haven't read the whole thread but see no reason why it wouldn't make a good daily :)

It's a breathe of fresh air amongst the usual boring VAG etc. cars

Hello, I've also joined to answer this question.

I have owned the FK2 TypeR for almost 18 month now and I use is every day.

This car will give you plenty of smiles per miles but be prepared for a few things that may get on your nerves a little.

One being the ride, if you plan to daily the car then or prepared for the suspension to get a little tiresome. It's hard but not crashy, and will become noticible on longer trips.

The car will go through the OEM recommended Continental Sport Contact 6 tyres very quickly. On new tyres,It took me only 7500 miles to get to 1.6mm.

The car runs noticeably better on Shell V power. I don't recommend anything else for this car. A full tank vets me 285ish miles.

The MPG is better around the doors than on a motorway run. 32-34 Is my average MPG, which is great considering the power output of the car.

On a motorway run the RPM sit's around 3000 at 70mph which is quite high...

If you get a car that was either registered to a private owner or dealership then some of the later cars (66/17 plates) will have a service pack on them for 5 years.

If the FK2 were a Porsche for example, given the numbers produced, the cars would go up in value. Sadly this isn't the case with this car, but is shouls be. This FK2 is without doubt a future classic (IMO).

Get the car, look after it, and you'll love every second of ownership. Accept the car for the track focused car it is and you'll be fine.

Age should never stop you buying what makes you happy.

Mate. That cars tank is 50L

285Miles over 50L is 25MPG.
