I'm hoping I can lean on the community here for a little bit of help in getting a new battery to me here in Guernsey - I say lean on the community, I'm happy to pay for this as a service!

I have a Dyson cordless vacuum in which the Li-ion battery has died, replacement batteries can be had cheaply but due to postage rules and regulations these can't be sent via postal services to Guernsey as stand alone batteries, they can however be sent as part of complete equipment per the rules here;

(e.g. rechargeable batteries found in electronic devices)
UK destinations: Yes
International destinations: Yes

What I'd propose is that I'd send you my Dyson, with the dead battery removed, you install the new battery (it's literally a case of sliding it in place and screwing in two screws) and then posting the complete (and hopefully now working!) vacuum back to me. I'll include return address labels and packaging within my original package to you for ease of repacking, I'll cover all postage costs, pay up front for the battery and then an amount to you for your time if you're willing to help!

Valpy's electrical & hardware store, St Martins, Guernsey, sell Dysons so surely they can get you a replacement battery ?

Indeed, £93 for a 1,300mah battery

But you have pay to post the entire Vacuum to somewhere in the UK which will cost what? pay for the battery and even offering to pay someone for their time etc, pay for it's return postage wondering if customs might withhold it so after all that how much would you actually save?

Do couriers/royal mail actually check the contents of packages bound for Guernsey for batteries? If not, wouldn't it be easier just to ask someone on the mainland to purchase it for you, then when it gets sent to them, just post it to you themselves?

I've been asked when posting something before "does this contain a battery?", but never to prove it doesn't.

The vacuum would be just the main body, which would fit in to an 8 inch square box - they're pretty small! A 4,000mah 3rd party battery is £36.00 - triple the capacity of the official Dyson battery.

Appreciate you're trying to help, but it's the postage where this all falls down as Guernsey are overseas and therefore falls in to the dangerous goods trap.

If you're willing to try that for me I'd be very grateful! :D:p

Yeh should have checked actual address I assumed 85miles would still be on guernsey and you could pick it up.

With electrical items you have to be wary of fake and unsafe goods buying off Amazon & Ebay, I while back I bought a pack of Oral-B toothbrush heads via Amazon, £14.99 in Boots but Amazon was £6.99, after a few days use the first one broke up in my mouth and subsequent investigations showed they were fake. Amazon refunded me without question

Would you mind if my good pal Carlos sent you some special white dust to fill the hoover with before you post it, just to look authentic you know ;)

I'd imagine the Postal service dont check + open mail for batteries. What they would do is not transport an item that had a label saying "Lithium batteries inside". If you buy from ebay you could request that the seller ships in an unmarked box.

You just need to contact a company with a hazardous goods licence. If I could find one to get (25kg) batteries from mainland Spain to Lanzarote, i'm sure you can from the UK to the Islands. Though the little islander mentality of most UK companies means they don't seem to like dealing with anything remotely foreign.

Be wary if anyone does, because only Royal Mail treat posting to places to like Gurnesey, like they do with the rest of the uk. Other couriers will charge a fortune.
