After looking after every car on Autotrader for months on end, I accidentally walked in to a dealer with a Golf GTD on the forecourt.

64 plate, Full MDSH, Zenons, Leather, Privacy Glass, pretty much every option except DSG. Bought...

Compared to the Focus ST-D its quicker, smoother, more economical and more refined. It's a minter and I'm delighted so far considering I wanted a hack and in some ways I've got a reasonable pricey hack that meets my needs.

Next step...remap.

Pic shows for me? When I say swapped, I mean ST off hired as was a company car, GTD was bought.

It looks like this to everyone else

I can see the pic :p. Needs more up close pics tho, looks cold there!

Whats the engine/bhp on the gtd? I did consider one as i like the look /alloys but ended up with a seat leon as it was a fair bit cheaper

Engine spec I'm guessing will be the same as the Leon. 184 BHP and 280 ft/lbs.

Totally different drive from the Focus. The ST was a kick of turbo then 3.5k nothing. The Golf doesn't have that kick and pulls more like a petrol engine right through the rev range. I was going to look at a Leon FR the day I seen the Golf but never bothered after this caught my eye.

Came with full heated leather, Xenons, front and rear sensors, radar guided CC, NAV, ContiSports all round, privacy glass, duel zone climate control, not sure if it was an extra but ambient lighting in the doors and sills - nice touch, auto lights and wipers, folding mirrors, few other nice touches like mud guards, rubber boot and floor mats, even alloy dust caps with the VW logo!

Looks pretty much the same spec as mine but I bought mine brand new on a 14 plate. I’ve had it now for 5 yrs and it’s done me proud. Only things I’ve had to change are the tyres, I’m on my second set of front tyres. But I’ve got Bridgestone potenzas s001 all round on mine.
Was looking at remapping mine but I’ve kept it standard, still deciding whether to keep it or chop it in for a Golf R or an Audi S3 or stretch a bit further and get the RS3.

But I know I’d miss mine if I was to let it go.

I've been looking at these, as well as the Octavia VRS & Leon FR. All the same engine just different specs and wildly different prices! The Seat seem to be the cheapest of the bunch, the problem is I much prefer the look of the golf and after having a mk7 for a company car I know how handy the adaptive cruise is. Won't be buying until the middle of next year so got a while yet to think about it.

The interior of the Seat compared to the Golf is the big difference. The Golf looks and feels more of a premium car, however it's hard to ignore the standard equipment on an FR model.

Comes down to personal preference.....

I think my car is cursed!

In 3 weeks of ownership, this is what's happened.

First week, puncture. No biggie but not had one in about 10 years.

Second week, stone strike cracks my windscreen. £75 excess to get it repaired.

Third week....deer strike! Front bumper, grill, fog light surround, ACC sensor, all the brackets behind the grill and radiator damaged. Was too expensive to pay for on my own so had to call my insurance. Gutted.

Oh wow. These things come in threes I suppose.

Although, I'd be quite happy for a deer to Strike my car, bad for the deer, but I'd get a fresh front end lol
