Is there a statistically significant correlation in better performance relating to the type of power connectors going into a GPU? I.e. higher clock speeds?

I'm thinking no but would like to garner opinion, especially as to why manufacturers would vary it at all.

Looking at 2080S cards and there is variation with higher spec cards often having 8 + 8 Vs 8 + 6 on lower tier models.

Sometimes, 8+8 vs 8+6 means the graphics card needs to draw less power over the PCIe bus. The MSI Gaming X 5700XT advertises that is why it is 8+8 instead of 8+6.

PCIe: 75W
6 pin: 75W
8 pin: 150W

So can it be completely ignored then in choosing any single GPU if you care about overclocking?

Will make things easier!

No because not every GPU clocks the same or infact gets the same performance results in say a 10% overclock. Not every GPU will achieve the same overclocks either. In terms of AMD vs nVidia cards anyways. Then there's the silicon lottory, some chips even being the same model will clock better than others.
The only similarity they all share when overclocking is the power draw significantly increases.
If some cards come with say 8pin and 6pin standard but they're the same variant of card but another comes with 2 x 8 pins all that means is that said card will have more room and greater potential power draw.
But tbh ive seen cards go out of spec for example 6 pin drawing upto 100 watts and 8 pin dawing close to 200 watts.

Id chose any card based on reviews and benchmarks as overclocking isn't guarenteed.

So a GPU may have the potential to draw more but also might not necessarily!?

It’s limited by bios more than anything. Look on vgabioscollection at the card and that will give you a wattage number.

For the most part if you can get one for the same price with 8+8 then I would. They tend to have a higher power limit bios and thus will likely clock higher and sustain higher clocks (if power is an issue anyway).

That's very useful thanks, didn't know techpowerup had that facility, before I was trying to glean power limit info from their reviews.

The EVGA black (their basic series) has higher power limit than FE cards, good to know:)
