ebay seller inflating postage charges

There was a thread on here recently (can't find it on search) which was I think was similar related.

Messaged a seller to reduce the £5 postage cost on a 1kg £25 item to £3 but got no response. Buy it now and raised issue with seller to be told that was the price through royal mail. Seller seemed somewhat "short" with me despite 1500+ 100% feedback but I imagined he was sending via an enhanced method or in a box)

Anyway arrive 4 days later in a plastic bag (standard second class) with a £3 postage label!

I have messaged the seller for a £2 refund postage cost

With my own listings I don't charge an inflated charge for postage and don't charge for packaging.....am I right for calling out this seller?
 
Look if you weren't happy with the postage you could always buy from another seller.

Fact is he maybe operating as a business so charging for materials and or time as well.
 
It depends what postage was offered. If it was offered as 1st class and it came via 2nd then you have right to complain.

The price you paid was £30. Why are you trying to lower it?

Did you not consider the total price when you bought it?

The stamp price is irrelevant. They charged you £5 for delivery (which you agreed to), your contract is with them.

Ebay charge a final value fee on the total including delivery. So they aren't benefiting by putting £25+£5 instead of £27+£3.

Ffs! I honestly dispair at the modern world.

The stamp cost £3, yes. But then there's the seller's time and resources in packing and getting it to the post office drop-off.

Genuinely thought when I read the thread title there was a return to the old days on ebay where sellers would sell you a 20 quid item for 2-3 quid then set postage at 20 quid to avoid paying the fees.
 
Can't believe the OP joined here in 2003, I assumed someone new to the internet had posted the thread.

You're paying for postage and packing, do you really think when you order anything online the postage and packing cost just covers the courier?

in a nutshell no. can you be a bit peeved he used 3 quid postage but charged you 5, yea. but that's about it. as someone above posted, you knew the buying price was £30, if you weren't happy with that then you should have looked elsewhere. raising a dispute over 2 quid is a bit a-holish.

that's your choice, as much as it is someone elses choice to charge for packaging.

Perhaps seller would have been better to list as £30 buy it now it now with free postage.

I'm waiting hopefully for my "friend" from the other thread to join in the discussion :p.... how much extra honestly is a plastic bag / cellotape & nipping down to the corner shop or post office. Its not a plus a couple of pounds on every order.

This affects you how?

Remember the seller also has to insure (or self insure) against the parcel being lost and the hassle that causes.

A lot of online stores have flat price delivery. Some deliveries no doubt making them money and some losing them money. You complain to them as well?

It's postage AND packing....... just because you don't charge for packing, doesn't mean everyone else shouldn't. And raising a dispute for two quid? Get a life :rolleyes:

If seller listed at £30 buy it now including free postage then inflated postage cost would not be an issue as the postage cost amount would not be stated on the listing.

"Free postage" on ebay is the buy it now price including postage
 
I normally inflate postage a little to cover costs. You knew the charge beforehand and agreed to it. It doesn't matter what it cost the seller.

I'm sure you don't expect online shops to charge actual postage and sell items at cost do you?

How does any of this affect your bank balance.

Secondly, it doesn't matter if they charged £10 for delivery. You accepted it. They aren't your friends sending you something for the cost of delivery.
 
If it had a £3 postage label there's a good chance your seller had to queue at a post office to post it. Part of that posting cost is their time having to stand in such a queue and possibly the cost of getting to the post office during business hours (drive/parking).

Adding the postage cost to the price of the item is unfair if someone wants to buy multiple from the same seller.
