ebay seller inflating postage charges

Jesus wept.

No you're not right.

If £2 is a large amount of money to you then you should have gone elsewhere like a shop maybe and spent your own time/fuel/travel expense picking it up.

There was a thread on here recently (can't find it on search) which was I think was similar related.

Messaged a seller to reduce the £5 postage cost on a 1kg £25 item to £3 but got no response. Buy it now and raised issue with seller to be told that was the price through royal mail. Seller seemed somewhat "short" with me despite 1500+ 100% feedback but I imagined he was sending via an enhanced method or in a box)

Anyway arrive 4 days later in a plastic bag (standard second class) with a £3 postage label!

I have messaged the seller for a £2 refund postage cost

With my own listings I don't charge an inflated charge for postage and don't charge for packaging.....am I right for calling out this seller?

You knew the postage price before hand and you agreed to buy it. So therefore IMO you are in the wrong here.

I charge more for postage simply because I take my time, packaging to a high standard using gorilla tape, etc rather than cheap brown tape, etc. I also then have to factor in my nearest post office is in a dodgy area as my area has nothing apart from a retail park. So I go to the post office further away with decent parking and I drive a sports car which does 15 mpg. So I could easily spend £2+ in fuel dropping the parcel off. I'd easily spend a further £3+ in packaging. Then whatever the postage costs. I tend to use a lot of bubble wrap and sometimes even double box for more fragile items.

Also the main reason why ebay sellers do this is because you don't pay ebay fees on postage.

So if he reduces the cost of postage. He will then need to increase the cost of his product by even more than the reduction in postage to compensate for the fees.

So would you be more happier he charges £3 for postage than sticks £4 more on the price of the product meaning you now need to pay £2 more for the same item?

You knew he charges £5 for postage and now you want a £2 refund? I would say you need to get out more.

As others have said, you agreed to pay £30 total when you bid on the item (or used the Buy It Now). The delivery charge includes both Postage and Packaging as well so yes the postage may have cost the seller £3, but the packaging will easily have cost him the extra £2.

Even if the above was not true, this is £2 you are arguing about, not worth the hassle, to anyone.

They've changed that now - you need to pay fees on the postage.
So if the seller charged £3 postage and it cost £3 to post via Royal Mail, the seller is actually losing money through fees.

Wow this thread is bonkers.

Op says £2 is a lot of money to some people as an actual defence.

I imagine the ebay seller must be pulling their hair out right now reading the OP's message to them.

"uh excuse me sir, i emailed before hand about your postage AND PACKAGING costs, found out they can't be reduced, still went on to purchase while knowing the costs, and now moaning that i've been charged those costs. I will now try to ruin your business by leaving bad reviews on your feedback page".

What a life

What's the sellers page? Maybe we can all review this over priced con job seller.

Edit:
I think I found it. OP: what do you need with 1kg Fresh Gaziantep Baklawa?

Jeez what a rip. If that is correct then I'm even more in the sellers favour than before. OP wants them to make a loss.

If they had it listed as £30 with FREE postage you would have been happy then, once you have paid for the item you have agreed and consented to their price, you should have got them to re-invoice you with a lower cost if they would, if not don't buy the item

Get a grip OP. you knew the costs before purchasing, if you weren't happy with them then don't buy from them. Don't buy from them then expect to get money back for postage. I always charge more for postage as i need to spend money on packaging materials and time spent on packaging plus taking it to the post office etc.

It turns out the seller bought the item from wholesale for £16. How dare they try to make a profit to live off!

(might not be true, I don't know the figures, I am not a shop!)

If you weren't happy with the costs then why did you buy it? I always add a couple of pounds extra on the postage knowing full well it won't cost that much. If they choose to buy it, it's not my problem. I didn't force them to.

This backfired

Yeah you have no idea what costs the seller incurs.
Tbh it's irrelevant.

Its not a hidden charge. You agreed to pay X for postage
The seller provided said service

You'd hardly complain if a shops standard postage charge was £5 and the royal mail cost was 3.

I assume this has now hit home and you'll just move on?

Plus pricing in for a bit of risk if you've got the rates wrong.

Bet this would be a very different thread if the postage had actually cost £7 and the seller had asked the OP to stump up the extra cash!

Wow after 3 pages perhaps I see I am somewhat in the minority over the inflated postage charge situation. I have messaged the seller regarding the charge but certainly won't be going along the dispute route. I still think there should be more clarity in ebay postage charges i.e what % is the actual postage cost and what if anything is the sellers fee on top (fare enough if the seller has special packing charges/ fuel in the car etc) but I suspect that is not always the case.

Op send me your PayPal address I'll give you £2

Result! email in trust....

only j/k:p

By the way, if the seller is VAT registered then £5 delivery is £4.17. Less probably another 67p eBay and PayPal fees.

So they actually receive £3.50 and have to buy post, packaging and cost of time to pack and post.

Do you still think that’s unfair?

When I sell on Ebay, I just take a guess at postage costs. Normally I'm about right, but I don't do anything about if I'm not, like asking for more, or refunding anything.

All you need to know is the total cost. If you don't like the cost, don't buy the item.

Do you complain to tesco because they don't show you the breakdown of cost price, profit, shipping charges and other costs on your loaf of bread?
