Hi,

I've had the i5 3570k for about 5 years now and looking to upgrade and haven't kept up with the market.
What's today's equivalent of 3570k and what should I upgrade to? Ryzen has piqued my interest given Intel seem to have vulnerabilities every now and then and is more value for money!

What do I lose by going AMD Ryzen if any? I play games and run VMs for studying etc.

My max budget is £500 for CPU, 32GB ram, motherboard and 1TB m2 ssd

Thanks

Defo go for Ryzen mate, they are miles ahead. Considering moving to a new build myself within weeks, either gonna get the 3950x if I can get one, or wait and get the 3960x. The 3900x and 3800x look sweet too.

For that sort of budget you're probably looking at a Ryzen 3600, although you may be able to stretch to a 3700X.

Why do you need 32GB of RAM exactly?

This seems to be the general recommendation at the moment but at little over £500, there is cheaper ram available which may pull the price down towards £500 but the Crucial stuff gets good praise.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £539.06 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Push for a 3700x, you will be sorted for quite a while then OP. If you only game just get 16gb ram, I have 32gb and it's pointless me having it, have never used more than 16 on anything.

This is my view, unless something specific requires a lot of RAM cut down to 16GB and spring the extra for a 3700X.

Looks like the OP keeps his hardware for long periods of time, so the 3700 is the better option imo.

In a recent build I went for a 3600, as I’m only gaming.

The plan is, when the next gen come out I’ll upgrade to something like the 4700x which should see me through the life of this motherboard, or... maybe take advantage of big price drops on something like a 3900x when it becomes ‘last gen’ and the price drops.

The 3600 won’t last forever, but if you’re only gaming and building on a budget, you don’t really need any more right now...

I can stretch out for a bit more if it is much better. To be honest, I don't think I've ever gotten close to 16GB except maybe when I'm running nested virtualisation it seems to love RAM! However I probably could get away with 16GB.

Are the Ryzens much more energy efficient and generate less heat than its Intel counterpart? I currently have a Coolermaster hyper 212 evo which has been great. Can I re-purpose this for Ryzen 3600 or 3700x?

Unless you have a later 212 with am4 bracket you will need to get the am4 bracket which is impossible to find now (it used to be free) unless you want to pay 15+ quid.

2nd what others say about ram, unless you really need it. Have 16gb and run it at higher speeds than you will probably get with 32gb.

I think I'm about to pull the trigger and buy the ryzen. I'm reading online and see quite number of people saying their Ryzen 3700x run at 50c idling and fluctuates a lot. That's quite hot when idling and for light use like web browsing. Does it generally run this hot? In the summer it would probably run at 60-65c in my house. My i3570k - granted a different chip - idles at 32-35c and peaks about 65c or so.

What's good and quiet fan/heatsink to get for it?
