Morning all

I thought I'll take the opportunity of a black Friday sale to look at replacing my current rig - my old one was built is 2011 (taking advantage of the OC sale) and it's time to replace it.

I doubt I have anything that can be salvaged from the old rig but I'll list a couple of things that might be re-used?

Antec High Current Gamer 520W 80 Plus Bronze Power Supply
Bitfenix Shinobi Gaming Case
ocUK 22x DVD+RW SATA ReWriter

That is probably the only things I can think that might prove useful but happy to replace if needed.

For me the question is - is it better to buy the parts myself and build or take advantage of the ready made rigs on offer from OC?

For example:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk-gaming-spectra-gaming-pc-intel-core-i5-9400f-fs-1d7-og.html

Is there much cost saving buying parts individually and then building something yourself or just go for an easier option and buy a ready made one?

In terms of a custom build I won't need a monitor/keyboard/mouse or OS

Thanks muchly :)

buying the parts and building yourself will always be the cheapest option. what resolution is your current monitor?

presumably this is going to be used for gaming?

Yes it will be for gaming but I wouldn't say I'm a hardcore gamer, more casual :)

It's currently running 1440 x 900 (it's not a gaming monitor as such, just an old office monitor I picked it up from somewhere)

From what you mention though it's probably best to build my own rig, is there anything I can re-use or is it better just going for brand new parts?

The case and optical drive would be ok. The antec PSU would more than likely be fine too but you can get a decent gold rated superflower for 59 which will have warranty (assuming antec one isn't still under warranty)

Here's a £700 build which just needs windows and a case.

In my opinion £700 is the sweet spot for 1080p gaming.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £707.63 (includes shipping: £11.70)

Thanks, I suspect everything I brought previously is out of warranty so it makes sense to replace a critical part like that.
im assuming you'll have some HDD's in your old build, you'll be able to use them as additional sotrage.

ive included 2 cheap drives in the basket above. these are swappable if you already have drives. i would suggest some kind of m.2 drive though as they can often be a pain to install once in a case and everything is plugged in.

1 x 256gb m.2 ssd for a boot/app drive
1 x 1tb mechanical drive for storage.

so you're call then.

gives you a few more options if you remove the 1tb mech drive

1. use money towards case/windows.
2. get a bigger storage m.2 ssd
3. get the 3600x rather than 3600 £22 more expensive.

Thankyou, I'll give it some thought - I'm tempted to go with a new drive and just discard my old one, have a fresh start - there isn't much on it that I need and most stuff is saved to an external hard-drive anyway

Thankyou for the clarification - I've just been mucking about with one of the custom build gaming PC's and I think I've added in everything listed previously and it came to £777

Considering the individual parts were just over £700 and having to utilise my old case would it not be better for the extra £70 to get the 3 year warranty and also the build quality that comes with it or am I missing/overlooking something

very true but I imagine I would have the same delivery costs as well with buying individual products?

I'm also assuming things like a power supply come as standard? If so which one would come with this system?

Hi all, now that Xmas has arrived I'm ready to purchase my new PC but before I do is the spec already mentioned still valid or has any products been reduced in the Xmas sales that might mean I can get something better for around the same price?
