BA Avios vs Virgin Flying Club

When I was making the same decision a couple of years ago it came down to destinations. Virgin only really seemed to fly west whereas BA went to all points of the compass.

Yeah i think this is where i keep falling down. Maybe it's not as beneficial because i'm not a regular flyer (only a few short trips to Europe each year on Easyjet)

But i'm looking at flights to NY with Avios and in First it's £680/person in taxes and i think alright i'm getting a nice experience but i need to mess around getting to Heathrow which adds a decent chuck of cost on top and then i question if it's even worth it when i could grab a cheap Economy return from Manchester for about half the price!

At least with Virgin, as limited as my options are it's a lot more straight forward!

Interesting, i thought with VA you could use the points against any purchase so would've offered better availability.

Is that for the referrer or referree?

I know with the gold card the person referring gets 6k points but the person signing up only gets 2k

you can use VA points for a discount as opposed to reward flights but its a very bad use of them

last I knew the referrer with BA got 9k and referee a smaller amount

Look at Aer Lingus for New York? Get a cheap flight on Ryanair or Aer Lingus to Dublin, then use Avios to New York. 75k Avios and ~£75 in 'taxes' for a business return - https://www.headforpoints.com/2019/03/31/how-to-redeem-avios-on-aer-lingus/

Best value use of Avios on BA is generally on Reward Flight Savers and upgrades, rather than outright redemption. e.g. find a good value prem economy cash and upgrade to business with Avios. This is a very thorough thread - https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/bri...2-your-guide-spending-avios-2019-edition.html

Remember you can use Avios on partner redemption throughout OneWorld Alliance and Virgin have a handful of partners, but I don't think the value is as good as you can get on Avios especially for short hop flights around areas like Asia or the US.

I paid 40000 Avios and £84.80 for 2 one way business on Cathay from Singapore to Hong Kong in the summer which was superb.

And I've got a fair few built up for the next similar trip and I think we'll probably do 3 destinations instead of 2. As the combinations you can do in Asia are great.

.

The absolute best is long haul business / first redemptions with the vouchers but you need to be a heavy hitter on generating miles for this

My general plan is to get 2 vouchers a year and hopefully generate about 300k avios a year to make use of them
