We have recently bought a inverter microwave combination oven and the top get very hot when using the convection oven feature. The best place we have to place it in the kitchen is on a worktop that has overhead cupboards, but the heat is making the white plastic coating on the door bubble, we havn't got anywhere else to put it where it won't get in the way.
I have thought about laying a heat proof mat on the top, can anyone recommend one that would do the job
Thanks

There are no vents on the top luckily enough, the gap is 2cm not 10, but In should be able to get a bit of shelving or similar

2cm sounds too small, my folks have more like 20 .. even if there are no vents, they usually need gaps ... what does the pdf say.

I'd probably get a 4-5mm glass chopping board, that will be proud of cupboard, and stand it on top on a couple of 10mm wooden batons.

2nd though - a custom cut piece of 2mm polycarbonate sheet - it's very temperature resistant ... we got some off ebay for heat proof mats. ~£10

hob/oven. Broke ours when moving house 8 years ago, not missed it.

i find that an oven would dry it out certain foods too much. it also would take a long time and be inefficient use of the energy. i mean 45 seconds in a microwave or wait 5 minutes for an oven to heat up then stick it in for 2 minutes.

seems like a lot more hassle. microwaves are a convenience and efficient product.

like i can cook a baked potato in 5 mins.

Probably but not missed it. :)

Combis do get hot and thats why they are supposed to have a gap at the back and on top.
The heat has to escape somewhere, and if you restrict it too much the unit itself may overheat.

Your better off insulating the cupboard more than the microwave in my opinion. Ie fix something more heat resistant to the cupboard, so the air can flow underneath and out, than trying to keep it in.
But it sounds in general like you have this too close to other items.
IIRC mine is supposed to be 5 cm in front of and 5cm below any other items.

OK im going to ask, is it normal for a combi micro to get that hot that it melts cupboard doors above it?

where do you expect the heat to go?

if it's one of those ones with a grill at the top. Then yeah I'd expect that heat to travel upwards and to anything overhead.

So I wouldn't place anything under a kitchen cabinet. It's why my toaster, kettle, airfryer, pizza oven never go under the kitchen cabinets so the heat rising from them gets dispersed upwards and onto the ceiling which is farther away and by that time has cooled down by quite a bit.

Why don't you stick your hand over the boiling kettle next time and see how hot that gets?
